Hello Families!
I hope you have all enjoyed the long weekend. Happy Rosh Hashanah to those who celebrate!
Parent conferences are coming on October 13. Please save this date. More information about signing up for your time slot will be coming soon.
Math: This week we will continue to practice the standard algorithm for multiplication of whole numbers, and we will use multiplication to think about the reasonableness of our solutions. We will also begin transferring our understanding of whole number multiplication to decimal multiplication, with an emphasis on patterns and how they are adjusted for place value.
Optional homework this week: Lessons 10-12 (see Homework tab on my website for details)
Science: We are learning about mixtures and solutions this week. Mixtures are a combination of two or more substances. Solutions are a special type of mixture where all parts are evenly mixed and look the same because one substance has dissolved in another. Additionally, we will learn that all matter is made up of particles that are too small to be seen. We will illustrate solids, liquids, and gases as being made up of these particles with more or less space between them.
On top of all of the amazing learning we are doing, some important dates are also coming up. They are:
Thursday, September 25 - PTA Meeting at 5:15 pm
Thursday, September 25 - Hey Dude, Nice Shoes Parent Presentation at 6 pm
Friday, September 26 - Grandparents' Lunch Option 3
Wednesday, October 1 - Science CBA Unit 3
Friday, October 3 - Spooky STEAM Night
Tuesday, October 7 - Math CBA Unit 2A
Friday, October 10 - Fall Picture Day
Friday, October 10 - PTA Movie Night 6pm
Friday, October 10 - End of first quarter
Monday, October 13 - No School / PARENT CONFERENCES
Monday-Friday, October 13-17 - Book Fair
Friday, October 17 - Last day to pre-order books for author visit
Monday, October 27 - Nicholas Solis author visit
Please read the following important announcements:
From Ms. Gagliardi and Ms. Wood:
Two important notes in case you missed our Parent Night presentation.
First, we are doing 5th-grade class shirts through Amazon this year. The Woodliardi pairing color is Navy. You can order using this link.
Second, our 5th graders have an amazing opportunity to celebrate their elementary school journey with a special field trip to Reunion Ranch in May! This trip is designed to be a fun-filled celebration as our students prepare to transition to middle school. We are considering using charter buses this year. However, charter buses would require additional funding beyond our regular transportation budget. Please fill out this form to help us to gauge parent interest and support before moving forward with planning.
From Mrs. Mensing, Librarian:
We are excited to host author Nicholas Solis! This visit has been made possible with support from our Sommer PTA and funds raised through our Scholastic Book Fair (our next one is coming October 10th).
If your family would like to pre-order one of the author's books, he will personalize it on the day of the event. Click here to pre-order!
From Mrs. Macre:
Parents, on Friday, you should have received an email from Round Rock ISD about the Panorama Survey. Round Rock ISD Board Goal Four measures student perceptions of Sense of Belonging, Safety at School, and Student Self-Efficacy. Since 2023, the district has used a survey from Panorama Education to help us understand these perceptions.
In previous years, parents could opt-out of this survey. However, with the passage of Senate Bill 12, your student must be opted-in for them to participate.
To review the questions on the survey, please click the link.
3rd-5th Grades: Student Perception and Climate
See this link for more information.
The survey will be administered during the weeks of October 6-17 (Fall Survey) and March 2-13 (Spring Survey). To give your consent for your student to take the survey, please view this email and make your selection by September 29, 2025.

Hello Families!
Happy Monday!
Math: This week we are learning to evaluate expressions using the order of operations (PEMDAS). This is a foundational skill for every math class students will have from now until graduation. Fifth graders do not work with exponents, but they should understand the order in which the other operations are computed, and that operations in parentheses are solved first. Towards the end of the week, we will work on the standard algorithm for multiplication of whole numbers.
Optional homework this week: Lessons 6-9 (see Homework tab on my website for details)

Math: Our new math module began today. This is a long module that will last us through the end of October. As a result, it is broken up into two parts. The first part focuses on multiplication. This week, we review the vocabulary words "factor" and "multiple" as we apply them to determining prime and composite. We will work on place value strategies for whole number multiplication, as well as using estimation to determine the reasonableness of a product. At the end of the week, we will begin working with numerical expressions.
Optional homework this week: Lessons 1-5 (see Homework tab on my website for details)
Science: This week concludes our unit on physical properties of matter. We reviewed thermal and electrical conductivity (whether energy passes through a substance = conductor, or if the substance prevents energy passing through = insulator) today. Students will complete a study guide midweek to prepare for the test on Thursday, Sept. 11.
Mandatory homework this week: Science study guide (will be handed out on Sept. 9)

Sommer 4th and 5th Grade Families!
Does your child like to perform? If your child likes to sing (solo and/or in a group), then the Stallion Choir is the group to join! We would like to invite any interested 4th and 5th graders to audition for the 2025-2026 Stallion Choir. Rehearsals are held every Thursday(2:55-4:00) for the entire school year. Rehearsals will begin Thursday, September 18th. Note: beginning in January, students who audition for an “extra” part in our musical will need to be able to attend rehearsals on Tuesdays, as well. Over the years, the choir has performed at school functions, morning assemblies, as well as performing a major musical at the end of every school year. We are proud to announce that this year's musical will be Disney’s Dare to Dream, Jr. This select group will be limited to 85 members. From Mrs. Elarms:
Based on NEW Legislation, parents are now required to give consent for their child to be given health care needs by the school nurse and teachers (for minor things such as cleaning a scrape and providing a band-aid.) We also have to give consent for our counselor to provide any services beyond a short check in with a student. Sometime on Friday, or close to it, you should have received an email from POWERSCHOOL. (This is the same place that you complete registration forms.) There are NEW FORMS there which allow you to give consent to these two specific area. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE fill these out. The new legislation goes into effect on September 1st. We really need to have this form for every student by then. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out!
A Note From Nurse Stephanie:
If Nurse Stephanie does not have consent on the form referenced in the message above from Mrs. Elarms, she legally cannot assess or treat your child until she has parent permission. This includes something as simple as taking a student's temperature.
If you haven’t received the form, please email me so we can get it straightened out quickly.

With the weather continuing to be sweltering, we ask your help in keeping kids safe. Please send your child to school each day with a water bottle. Also please talk to your child about taking their jacket off when we go to recess. We had some 5th graders wearing their jackets as they played soccer last week. We appreciate your help in this manner.
Hello Families!
We've had a great 1st week of school. We ended the week all together creating our class treatment agreement. This is our agreement on how we will treat each other throughout the year. You will be getting paper copies soon. I encourage you to talk about this agreement with your child.
Math: In math, we will multiply and divide with decimal numbers. We will use the area model and the standard algorithm to extend our understanding of these operations from whole numbers to decimals.
Optional homework this week: Lessons 10-14 (see Homework tab on my website for details)
Science: Our new science unit covers on properties of matter, beginning with mass, volume, and relative density. As the week progresses, we will classify objects based on their ability to attract a magnet and will discuss which metals are/are not magnetic. Finally, we will learn about conductors and insulators of both thermal and electrical energy. We will classify objects based on their ability to conduct energy (allow it to pass through) or insulate energy (prevent energy from flowing through).
