Health Science Theory and Practice (HSTP)

About The Class

Students will explore a variety of topics that will prepare them for continuing education and employment in healthcare. This is a very fast-paced class that heavily emphasizes the profession of Medical Assisting. Students will use hands-on practice and simulation to advance medical knowledge and skills.  They will have the opportunity to obtain the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant certification (CCMA) as well as BLS (Healthcare Provider) CPR certification. This is a yearlong course and prerequisites for this class include: Principles of Health Science and Medical Terminology.  Students may not take Medical Terminology and this class at the same time.

 

Course Topics

Topics that will be covered include: Leadership and Teamwork; Ethical and Legal Issues related to Healthcare; Communication in various settings & medical terminology; Safety:(fire, personal & patient, hazardous materials, body mechanics); Governmental Regulations;  Infection Control;  Employability Skills (Soft and Hard Skills); Professionalism; BLS CPR; Therapeutic & Diagnostic Skills; Phlebotomy & Electrocardiography (ECG) skills; Occupationally Specific Skills and Knowledge such as the profession of medical assisting,  vital signs,   medication administration, specimen collection, patient care and physical exams.
