Reading & Writing

Reading

Students in sixth grade will participate in Reader's Workshop using a variety of reading materials.

Everyday the students are expected to have a self selected novel of any genre that is meaningful to them and is written at their independent or instructional level. This is an important reading status grade and a time for me to conference with the students about what they are reading. Mrs. Stiles, our librarian has curb side pick up available by grade level so your child can self select books, put them on hold, and then pick up on the designated day.

Writing and Word Study

Students in sixth grade will participate in Writer's Workshop to develop their written communication skills. All students are required to maintain a writer's composition notebook and have it available for class each day. There will be notebook checks as grades to monitor progress throughout the year. The students will have a lot of free choice in their notebooks as well as strategies taught in the classroom to fill their notebooks. The WNB (writer notebooks) will be virtual this year and I will help the students set this up and troubleshoot with them.

Here is a link to a document that provides a rubric for our writer's notebooks. It also gives a list of ideas for your child to choose from for entries.
