Mrs. Langham's Class

Hello, and welcome to 3rd grade. I am so excited to be your child's teacher this year and thrilled to be at Sommer Elementary. This is my fourth year at Sommer, but it will be my 17th year of teaching. I've also taught kindergarten, first, and 4th grade both in Austin and Pflugerville. I had the honor of receiving Teacher of the Year at Hill Elementary in Austin. This year, 3rd grade is departmentalized. I will be teaching ELA (English Language Arts which includes reading, writing, spelling/word work) and Social Studies. My partner teacher is Kathy Morin. She will be teaching Math and Science.

I grew up in Indiana and moved to Texas when I was 16. I met my husband when I was 17. We will be celebrating our 33rd wedding anniversary on the second day of school! It's hard to believe we have been married that long. We have two beautiful daughters and one handsome grandson.

I am a graduate of the University of Texas and am a huge Longhorn fan. I especially enjoy watching Longhorn football. In my spare time, you can find me playing with my grandson, working out, or going to the movies.

Third grade was a memorable year for me as a child. It was the bicentennial year (that is me in the bottom picture as a 3rd grader). Teaching third grade is truly very exciting. The kids are somewhat independent, but still think that school is cool. I look forward to a wonderful year with your child and can't wait to watch them grow and learn. I'm glad that I can be a part of that special time with your family.

My Educational Philosophy

I believe that students need to be the leaders of the classroom. Even third graders are old enough to be held accountable and to take responsibility for their learning.

I do not believe that kids were made to sit in seats. They need to get up and move around.

Differentiated instruction is a must. I use guided reading and small groups to meet the individual needs of my students.

Helping a student to discover their love for reading is a privilege that I never get tired of.

School should be fun!
