All resources sent home in first grade are optional! We choose to provide resources for families to make your time at home together more productive if you choose to incorporate extra practice time into your family routine. None of these items need to be turned in and they will not be taken for a grade.
Homework Resource Folder: We will be sending home a black folder with every student in the coming weeks that is full of resources for you to use when working with your child at home. This will include things like high frequency word practice ideas, number sense practice, comprehension question ideas and other resources that align to our curriculum through the year.
Math: Each child will come home with a Bluebonnet Math “Succeed” book for each module we teach. This book has a homework page for each classroom lesson. These are great re-teach or practice pages for students to work on in order to solidify their classroom learning. There are many parent prompts and instructions to help you through this. We also link the parent pages for each module and topic in our weekly newsletter if you need more information.
Language Arts: We highly encourage reading for at least 10-15 minutes EVERY night. This could be your child reading to you, taking turns each page or even you reading to your child. This makes a huge difference in your child's reading! At the end of every unit your child will come home with their Amplify curriculum workbook from that unit. We are unable to get to all of the pages in the book within the unit time span so there are many extra pages and even some specific take home practice pages incorporated throughout and at the end of the book for you to work on with your child. You can find more information about high frequency words below and in your child's homework resource folder.
First grade students are working to read High Frequency Words in various texts as well as to spell these words accurately in their writing. High frequency words, provide an excellent base for reading at an early age.
These 109 HFW make up 50% of children’s literature according to the science of reading. First graders are expected to leave this year knowing 100 of these words. During instruction we encourage students to use their phonetic knowledge to decode these words rather than memorize them. We refer to words that are not decodable as heart words. We have these words broken down into 7 different sections color sections.. As they master each list they will move on to the next list. Once a student can read all 109 words they will begin to work on writing all 109 words.
