Your child will take a blue folder home daily. Please review the information regarding your child’s day, initial, and have your child return the folder daily. Each night, I would like your child to read. More information about this will go home after beginning of the year reading testing is complete.
First grade students are working to read High Frequency Words in various texts as well as to spell these words accurately in their writing. High frequency words, provide an excellent base for reading at an early age.
These 109 HFW make up 50% of children’s literature according to the science of reading. First graders are expected to leave this year knowing 100 of these words. During instruction we encourage students to use their phonetic knowledge to decode these words rather than memorize them. We refer to words that are not decodable as heart words. We have these words broken down into 7 different sections color sections.. As they master each list they will move on to the next list. Once a student can read all 109 words they will begin to work on writing all 109 words.
