My name is Kristy Smith. I grew up in a small west Texas town called Alpine. In 1992 I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and a specialization in Math, from Texas Tech University. I was a kindergarten teacher for 28 years and an interventionist for 4 years. This will be my 34th year teaching and my 2nd year providing dyslexia services. I began teaching at Blackland Prairie Elementary when the school opened in 2001 and obtained my WRS Level 1 Certification in 2023. In 2025, I became "Texas Dyslexia Academies" Certified. In addition, I had the privilege to attend the Reading by Design 5-day initial training.
I feel very blessed to work at such a great school. I love teaching and I am so appreciative of the support I receive from my parents. With this great partnership, my students are successful.
Blackland Prairie is a Leader in Me school. We live and breathe the 7 Habits of Happy Kids. Along with these principles, I implement Conscious Discipline in my classroom.
I have a 24-year-old daughter named Kelsey and a 23-year-old son named Clay.
I am very excited to begin this school year and to meet all of my students and parents.
