Frau Melgar has been teaching at Westwood High School since 2010, but has been with Round Rock ISD since 2000 with only the 2006-2007 school year in a different school district. She went to school in Houston, TX, first going to Sterling Aviation Sciences, but then transferred to her zoned school, Sharpstown in her junior year. This is where she first started learning German having already studied Spanish since middle school. After a semester at St. Edward's University, the amazing German Professor, Dr. Harald Becker convinced her to change her major to International Studies with a minor in German. Then during her junior year, it was off to Universität Trier. Trier is where she really began to grow her language skills and truly take in the German culture. After a year abroad there was no "just having a minor" in German, so she transferred to University of Texas at Austin. She received her BA in German with a minor in History in 1997. In 2017 Frau Melgar was named German Teacher of the Year by the Texas Foreign Language Association (TFLA) as well as Foreign Language Teacher of the Year. With this honor she moved up to the Southwest Conference on Language Teaching (SWCOLT), where she was honored with the 2018 Southwest Region Foreign Language Teacher of the Year and was a finalist for 2019 ACTFL Teacher of the Year.
Frau Melgar loves to travel, and does so as much as she financially can. Every even summer is reserved for traveling with her students to Gersthofen, Germany where she has led students on an exchange program (GAPP) with students from the Paul Klee Gymnasium since 2007. She has also been fortunate enough to lead students to Japan in 2013. And since her husband is from El Salvador, she enjoys traveling there to visit family and practice her Spanish.
Other travel includes following her other passion, the Houston Astros. She, her husband, and her best friend, who lives in Alaska plan a trip a city where the Astros are playing for a game. If Frau Melgar ever decides to change professions, it will be to be an MLB Official Scorekeeper!
Her other passion is training & playing with her dogs. Her dogson, Bucky, trains and competes in Nosework, and her newest puppy, Zuki has begun her training in Nosework and Dock Diving - she will be competing soon.
