Q: What are some indicators that my child might benefit from TAG services?
A: Please see the National Association for Gifted Children websites for articles on common traits of gifted children, myths about giftedness, identification, and much more!
Q: How is my child referred for TAG?
A: Parents will need to access an online referral form on the RRISD TAG website during the referral period in the fall. The referral form must be submitted by the deadline. Testing is completed in the spring, then a decision is made by the placement committee about appropriate services. Services for students who are placed in TAG begin in May.
Q: We are moving to FNE and my child is already in TAG. How will TAG services change?
A: Students who transfer to Forest North who have been in TAG in a RRISD school continue in the program as before. Students who were placed in a similar TAG program in another district may be placed in the RRISD program permanently or provisionally based on existing TAG placement or may be tested and must qualify based on RRISD standards. A decision should be reached within 30 days of the receipt of documentation of placement in a previous TAG program.
Q: We are moving from FNE to a different school and my child is in TAG. How will TAG services change?
A: If the student moves to a Round Rock school, they continue in the program as before. Parents should be aware that although the district TAG program is basically consistent across schools there will be some variation, and teachers at the new school will determine if the TAG program continues to be appropriate. If a student moves outside of RRISD, the new school may retest the student to determine appropriate placement in their program.
Q: What is the TAG program like at Forest North?
All kindergarten classes are visited by the TAG specialist at least three times for enrichment lessons.
All identified students in grades 1 - 5 are placed in a TAG cluster classroom. All TAG cluster teachers have specialized training to meet the needs of TAG students in their classrooms.
All identified students in grades 1-5 are pulled out daily to participate in the development of Advanced Level Products and Performances. These experiences are designed to enhance skills in self-directed learning, critical thinking, research, creativity, and communication and are cross-curricular in nature. Students will also receive lessons in social and emotional learning.
In grades 3-5, students identified as needing math services are given math instruction by the TAG specialist every day. The curriculum is accelerated and provides opportunities for depth and complexity.
In grades 3 - 5, students identified as needing Language Arts, Science, or Social Studies services are provided a differentiated and enriched curriculum by the classroom teacher with support from the TAG specialist.
Q: How might TAG services for my child change over time?
A: Once the need for TAG services has been demonstrated, students continue in the program unless the teachers or parents decide there needs to be a change. Changes in services may include adding subject areas (based on semi-annual checks with classroom teachers), taking a furlough of one year in one or more subject areas, or exiting the program completely.
