WHY? More important than learning Shakespeare or Steinbeck, one of life's greatest skills is to find spaces where we can meaningfully connect with one another. Before I presume to teach my students anything, I must understand them as individuals. Before they can open their hearts and minds to learn, they must feel known and valued. So then, we listen to the beat of one another's hearts through music, and withhold judgement and criticism. We find emotion, culture, storytelling and truth unveiled in a way that is both vulnerable and necessary. By allowing the students to chose a playlist, I am telling them that their voice matters. And that their experience is valid. In turn, when I invite them into the world of words and literature in the classroom, they know that it is a safe place to learn and explore and grow together. And the beat goes on...

In The Wee Small Hours of The Morning- Frank SinatraMichelle- The Beatles Dream a Little Dream Of Me- Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong California Dreamin'- The Mamas and The Papas Ain't No Sunshine- Bill Withers I have been told that I am an "old soul" when it comes to music but that's just because in the wise words of Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band, "Today's music ain't got the same soul." The amazing thing about these songs are the different effects they have on me and my mood instantly changes whenever I hear these songs play. In The Wee Small Hours of The Morning by Frank Sinatra helps calm me down, Michelle by The Beatles makes me want to stop and sing along, Dream a Little Dream of Me by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong makes me sway along with the beat, California Dreamin' by The Mamas and The Papas makes me want to dance freely along with the lyrics, and Ain't No Sunshine by Bill Withers makes me want to just sit still and listen to his voice. Nobody today sounds like any of these unique voices or has their style, and that is why I enjoy these songs. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5i3oOpryiGQvMoNTiTPTRa?si=LZI4HYqhRyGJMoIFgL1mCgDJ Timothy
Moonchild by King Crimson Epitaph by King Crimson In the Wake of Poseidon by King Crimson I Talk To The Wind by King Crimson The Court of the Crimson King by (You guessed it) King Crimson Frankly, I'm not sure when my obsession with the band started. If I had to guess because of their mostly calm-sounding music coupled with the serious lyrics just sticks with you. What I worry about is if Epitaph and especially In the Court of the Crimson King would be appropriate for school. There is no cussing, just dark topics. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6jNFMicVD9CDybC0kpy5fj?si=t5ekMMBTSkaQ22xkJjjOgQDJ Elaine
Meteor Shower (Cavetown) Lemon Boy (Cavetown) Green (Cavetown)Soft Fuzzy Man (Lemon Demon)Human (Dodie) My music stems from what my friends have suggested to me, since I grew up on old radio music and didn't have anything I really enjoyed. from there I picked what I liked from their suggested songs and found more similar artists/songs that I like, and that's kinda how I found my own music style. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/22svb7DFV0pKMVbTN19e8z?si=a66KdfoJRbqwv21RzRs8JADJ Carter
Keith Urban - Coming Home ft. Julia Michaels Thomas Rhett - Sixteen Parmalee & Blanco Brown - Just The Way Luke Bryan - Most People Are Good Rodney Atkins - If You're Going Through Hell Most people normally pick rap and hip hop I'm going to throw something in that very different. So I'm throwing in these five songs. All of them are country, and almost no one listens to country, so I'm throwing in something that almost no one listens to, but these songs are very humble.https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1l6NiPwPCAxfo4hw9lMwmL?si=AACFDbxlQOG_V5MsDFQcTADJ Olivia
Olivia by One Direction One Thing by One Direction Falling by Harry Styles Rolling In the Deep Adele Piece By Piece by Kelly Clarkson I think that these songs make me feel really happy and put me in a better mind space. Wham Bam Shang A lang by Silver brandy by looking glass Moonage dream by David Bowie Starman by David Bowie Space Oddity by David Bowie My music choices are mostly based off on movies like guardians of the galaxy vol. 1 and 2 because they have lots of 80's and 70's music that I really love. I chose some of David Bowie's songs because they are written really well and they make me think about space. For example, Starman is such an iconic song for space movies and I love the space frontier so I just connect really with that kind of genre.https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7xHrM39JZJa5QJUv33iAHJ?si=TvnhtGG_SLWawGE_kmTVcQDJ Annie

Violet by HoleDrain You by NirvanaSofarinrunning by Raccoon TourRooster by Alice in ChainsSliver by Nirvana I really like nirvana and other grunge bands because they can be big with fast guitar and percussion with yelling or it could be laid back with slow, easy guitar with laid back vocals and simple percussion. I like the song drain you and violet because it kinda fits both of those descriptions. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0sNoAvJzBsd0PokOuVqWdH?si=6_ILI7nxSE2JlxHb3y-g5gDJ Jordan
