Attendance
It is very important to have your child attend school regularly and on time. School doors open at 7:15am, and breakfast begins at 7:15am as well. Students not eating breakfast at school will meet in one of two places depending on which wing their class is. Students with a homeroom in the upstairs A-wing will meet in the fifth grade common area outside their classrooms where they are supervised by a fifth grade teacher until the first bell rings at 7:35am. Students with a homeroom in the downstairs D-wing will come straight to the D-wing when they arrive and go directly to their classroom. When your child will be absent, please email your child's teacher and / or complete this online absence form. If calling is not possible, please send a note the following day.
Homework / Grading
Grading is broken down into these weighted categories:
Daily work 70%
Assessments 30%
A deduction for late work may be given but will not exceed 10 points off the final grade.
Snack, Water and Lunch
Students may bring a healthy snack to eat. Snacks should be easy-to-eat finger foods (like carrot sticks, crackers, pretzels, as opposed to pudding with a spoon). Please do not send any snacks that leave your child’s hands filled with cheese and/or feeling sticky. We ask this because the students may be working or reading during this time, and we do not want their notebooks or classroom library books to be damaged.
Students are strongly encouraged to bring a water bottle to school each day (water only!!). To prevent them from getting lost, water bottles should be labeled with your child's name.
Students have the option to either bring their lunch or purchase a school lunch. When they arrive at school each day, they will choose which lunch option they want for the day. If students arrive after 7:50, they will need to bring a lunch from home, as the lunch count will have already been made. I
1. You can pay CASH or CHECK . The check must be made out to RRISD Lunch Fund and your driver's license number must be written at the top. You can pay for the month, or as much time as you feel comfortable with. Your child will have a card that they use like a debit card. This money should be paid to the cafeteria in advance of the day your child wishes to eat at school. *****Please do not send your child with loose change or money in their pocket. Money must be put into an envelope or baggie marked with the AMOUNT and the CHILD'S NAME.
2. MySchool Bucks is another option. This is an online payment system that is easy to update!
Birthdays
When it is your child’s birthday, they are allowed to bring in a treat to share with the class. This treat should be a simple snack, that is neat and already pre-portioned. Common birthday treats include cupcakes, cookies, or donuts. Please contact your child's teacher so that they can decide what time of day would be best to share this, and to ensure that no one else is celebrating that same day.
Clothing / Shoes
All 5th graders are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes every day such as sneakers, tennis shows, or something just as comfortable. Although we do not go to P.E. everyday, we do play and run outside each day. Sandals and slick bottom shoes can cause injuries. Be sure that clothing and outerwear is weather appropriate as we go outside most days for recess. Please make sure jackets are labeled with student names.
Thursday Folders
Thursday folders will include notes and flyers from the school and PTA, as well as any graded / completed work. Please take the information out of the folder so your child can return the folder the next day. You may return any papers that need to be completed by you in the Thursday folder. This is our main form of communication with families, so please check it each week! Please note that some papers may come home on days other than Thursday.
Toys / Electronics
Toys and electronics should not be brought to school. If your child carries a cell phone, please remind them to turn it off when they arrive at school. They can turn it back on after dismissal.
Dismissal
Dismissal is at 2:55. Before or on the first day of school, you will fill out a google form that indicates how your child is getting home each day. If they ride a bus, please indicate their bus number. If you need to change how your child gets home on any given day, please make sure to e-mail your child's teacher, send a note to school with your child, or call the office so they can notify the teacher. If your child is a car rider, they will be picked up in the back of the school in the car rider line. Please make sure to display the blue car rider sign with your child's name. If they are front walker, or parent pick-up, they will be signed out in front in the designated 5th grade line (signed out by a teacher if they are a walker and by a parent if they are parent pick-up). Daycare will have a designated spot to wait inside until their daycare bus arrives. Bus riders will be walked to the buses by a teacher. YMCA students will be dropped off at the cafeteria.
