You can expect to see Wednesday Folders come home almost every Wednesday. Please review the papers with your child, keep or recycle school work, and return any pages that are marked for return. Folders should come back to school the next day.
Typically we take one grade per subject per week. This can fluctuate depending on the schedule for the week and where we are in a unit. You are strongly encouraged to set up your Home Access account. This allows you to see what assignments make up each subject average. You can view grades as we enter them into the computer, so this often gives you a more accurate and current picture of grades than assignments in Wednesday Folders and progress reports. The link to Home Access can be found on the Deep Wood webpage.
As a parent, I LOVE Home Access. Here is how I use it: I have it set up to send me an email daily on what my son’s averages are. This means I don’t have to remember to check it. If I see an average drop, I can look at the assignment. We can then talk about it at home, reteach the skill at home (he loves that), and I can reach out to his teacher if needed. I keep it set to send me alerts for above and below 90, but I know some people set it to just get an alert if an average goes below a 70. You can also set it to text you if you prefer that over an email.
Corrections Policy - Any assignment with a score under 70 can be corrected and returned. Depending on the assignment, skills are often retaught in class. If an assignment comes home that is not corrected, you are encouraged to have your student correct it at home and return it by the following Monday. Please reach out if you need materials, such as a textbook, or if you have any questions about how to correct it.
Multiplication Facts - Quick recall of multiplication facts is foundational to 4th grade math. Students learned strategies for solving each fact in 3rd grade, and in 4th grade we will work on quick recall. We encourage students to be practicing their multiplication facts nightly at home to help with recall. Keep an eye out for a beginning of the year multiplication quiz coming home in Wednesday Folders today. It will show what facts your child currently knows and what facts they should be practicing. Students are expected to practice every night and to be able to quickly recall facts.
Note about math work: Wednesday Folders will have math papers from the week. The pages titled “Problem Set” at the top are not always completed in class, we often just do a selection of problems. Working on these pages at home is a great way to continue math practice at home. You can look at the examples of the completed problems and have your student work on any of the not completed problems for extra math practice. The pages titled “Sprints” are timed fluency practice. Your student can also practice completing these at home.
Nightly Homework:
Nightly Reading Minutes:
Students are to read approximately 30 minutes per night in their independent reading book. Families are encouraged to read with their student and to discuss their students reading with them. Nightly reading will be monitored in class through discussions, conferences, and page number checks.
Reading could look like:
Audio Books, school library books, home books, classroom library books, Round Rock Public Library books, e-books.
E-books: Epic!, MackinVia, Kindle/Libby Free App, Hoopla
Reading to self, reading to a sibling, reading to a pet, being read to, listening to audio books.
Graphic novels, informational books, chapter books, magazines.
Variety is good! We encourage you to read a variety of genres and a variety of types of texts.
