Every year, we evaluate multiple aspects of each 6th and 7th grade student as we begin to place them in the choirs for next year. Each student is evaluated based on their performance for the entire year. We place students based on ability and the choir in which they will grow as a musician. Below is a description of each choir:
Beginning Treble Choir: This choir is made up of treble voices (generally girls) that are new to singing in a choir. Students will learn how to read sheet music, utilize solfege and rhythm reading systems, and begin to blend and balance within small sections and the whole ensemble. This ensemble typically performs standard middle school music. This ensemble focuses on fundamentals, technique, and basic musical instruction that moves at a slower pace. Practice at home is expected.
Tenor Bass Choir: This choir is made up of tenor and bass voices (generally boys) in all grades and experience levels. Students in choir for the first time will learn how to read sheet music, utilize solfege and rhythm reading systems, and begin to blend and balance within small sections and the whole ensemble. Students with prior experience will have the opportunity to grow in the same skills as well as develop in ensemble leadership and peer to peer mentoring. This ensemble typically performs standard to challenging middle school music. The fundamental, technical, and musical instruction is moderately paced and the practice demands are moderate as well.
Advanced Treble Choir: This choir is made up of treble voices (generally girls) that have at least one year of experience singing in a choir. Students in this ensemble will grow in their musical skills (reading sheet music, utilizing solfege and rhythm reading systems, blending and balancing within small sections and the whole ensemble), and develop in ensemble leadership and peer to peer mentoring. This ensemble typically performs more challenging middle school music and occasionally high school level music. The fundamental, technical, and musical instruction is faster paced and the practice demands are more.
Regardless of where students are placed they will continue to learn about music and developing as a musician. Here are the areas we evaluate for each student:
Student Musical Needs: Each student has specific musical needs to help them in their journey as a musician. Our goal is to place them in the ensemble that helps them continue to grow. This is our most important priority. We want to meet each student where they are at.
Participation: How has the student participated in class through the year? Has the student attended all mandatory out of class events? Has the student made the effort to participate in optional events?
Preparation: Has the student come prepared for class on a regular basis? Has the student practiced and prepared for the class at home?
