Multiplication Mastery- This document outlines the strategies we use to help your child master their facts with many links to online games and practice.
Arrays are simply groups of objects like the donuts in the photo. Note that they are are placed in equal groups creating columns and rows. The multiplication equation 4 x 4=16 could be used to describe the array or your child may see 2 groups of 8 and record their thinking as 8+8=16 which we can then connect to the fact 8x2=16. Your child will begin making arrays to understand multiplication so creating them with small objects at home or spying them around town will develop a strong foundation for learning this new skill.
Supplies: Small Objects (Groups of 10, Extra Challenge: 20) Objects such as paperclips, small erasers, pom poms, cars, snacks, etc.
How Many Are Hiding? In this activity your child can pick a number of small objects. (less than 20) Alone or with a partner take turns hiding some of the objects under a cup and showing the leftovers. Children work out the answer to the question “How many are hiding,” and say the full number combination.
Example: I have 10 pennies, I decide to hide 4 in my cup. The child sees I only have 6 pennies leftover. Children should be able to say that I’m hiding 4 pennies and that 6 and 4 make 10.
Equal Groups
Children put objects in equal groups and skip count by number.
Example: Drag objects and say 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12..... or 3, 6 , 9, 12...
