Suspected head injuries are potentially serious injuries that should be handled with caution, and managed with clear, consistent communication. If your athlete feels they may have suffered a concussion, please have them visit with a staff athletic trainer in the athletic training facility, or on the sideline, for a concussion evaluation. While nobody wants to miss playing time, being transparent and honest about head injuries are important for ensuring your child can safely compete.
We cannot treat what we do not know about!
Attached below is our concussion information pamphlet, symptom score sheet, and concussion return to play progression. Included are various signs and symptoms of a concussion, our recommended concussion management physicians, and staff athletic trainer contact information. Our staff will use a combination of concussion evaluation tests, including but not limited to: SCAT6, VOMS, King-Devick, or Sway Medical screening, to evaluate your child.
The American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) defines a concussion as "an injury to the brain that results in temporary loss of normal brain function … from mechanical force or trauma." Concussions are commonly caused by a direct blow to the head or rapid acceleration-deceleration of the head, described as a "whiplash" injury.
Signs and symptoms of concussion may include, but are not limited to: Headache, nausea, vomiting, double/blurred vision, trouble concentrating, anxiety, dizziness, memory problems, sleepiness, slurred speech
Second Impact Syndrome (SIS) is a secondary head injury that occurs prior to fully healing from an initial head injury. Although SIS is a rare condition, the long-term effects may be severe -- and in certain cases, deadly.
Round Rock ISD's Concussion Return-To-Play progression is aimed at minimizing the incidence rates of Secondary Impact Syndrome, and safely returning your child back into activity. Completion and adherence to this protocol is mandatory for all suspected concussions regardless of diagnosis.
BY STATE LAW (HB. 2038): All suspected concussions MUST be evaluated by a physician or physician appointed designee (PA, NP) that is not at an Urgent Care or Emergency Department.
While your child's primary care physician is an acceptable option, we strongly encourage your child to be evaluated by physicians at the following concussion clinics. Both clinics specialize in concussion evaluation, management, and academic accommodations following a concussion.
