What an incredible few weeks it has been! As we head into the Easter break, I wanted to take a moment to look back at the whirlwind of activity, achievement and community spirit that has defined this spring half term. From sporting triumphs, to academic milestones, our students and school community have truly shone. It’s hard to believe we’ve packed so much into just a few short weeks but the energy around school has been absolutely fantastic. From the colourful creativity of World Book Day, to the hands-on discoveries during Science Week, our students have been diving headfirst into their learning.
We’ve also been working hard behind the scenes; our Danes Educational Trust partners have been in school collaborating with staff to further refine our reading and writing curriculum, ensuring our students have the very best tools to succeed and helping us make our reading and writing curriculum even more inspiring. HABS also recently hosted a really valuable SEND workshop for parents to attend.
It has been a busy term for PE! We’ve seen great teamwork in our football, tag rugby, and netball tournaments. Our teams showed great sportsmanship and skills, representing our school brilliantly at other local schools. And not forgetting our KS1 pupils who have benefited from new Haileybury tennis coaches on Tuesday lunchtimes, to help them develop their coordination and love for the game.
Learning certainly hasn't been confined to the four walls of the classroom either, Year 5 really enjoyed a wild day out at the zoo, linking their science curriculum to real-world conservation.
It has also been wonderful to see how our school community spirit has really shone through our events. The Easter Fare and Mother’s Day stall were both massive successes. The Easter Fare raised a whopping £3785.00! We are also thrilled to announce that our recent athlete visit was a massive success, raising just over £3,000 - a huge thank you to everyone who supported that too! This incredible total will go directly toward brand new PE and playtime equipment for all year groups.
Amongst all these highlights, it’s also important to celebrate the quiet, brilliant work happening in our classrooms every single day. It’s been a term to be proud of, and we hope everyone enjoys a very well-deserved break! I wish you all a happy and restful Easter break.
Best wishes,
Mrs Emma Benzal Fowler - Headteacher
We are finishing this term with a whole school attendance of 95%. This is still under the DfE target of 96%. We would however like to thank those parents who have taken steps to improve their child's attendance this term and we will continue to work with families to ensure children do not miss valuable days of learning. It is really important that your children are in school every day. Crucial learning is lost if they do not attend school or if they are regularly in late, which is very hard to make up.
Class Attendance Summary:
EYFS: 94.3% Year 1 : 95.4%
Year 2: 94.2% Year 3: 95%
Year 4: 95.2% Year 5: 97%

The dojo points continue to be extremely popular and it has been wonderful to see the pure excitement in the children Whether they are being recognised for a brilliant insight during a lesson, showing kindness to a peer, or simply putting in extra effort, the children are truly thriving on this positive reinforcement. There is a real sense of pride as they watch their monsters grow and their totals climb, and it has become a fantastic motivator for building positive habits across the school.
Teachers give dojos at their discretion and are very aware of being fair and making sure ALL children who follow our values receive them every day. As a result, it is great to see all pupils progressing up the dojo ladder and being rewarded along the way.
Congratulations to DAHL house who have again claimed the title for this half term!
Here’s how the points stand:
1st: DARWIN with 8703 points
2nd: WENLOCK with 8523 points
3rd: ELGAR with 8417 points
4th: TUDOR with 8324 points
5th: DAHL with 7857 points
Let’s keep up the great work and continue to support each other as we aim for the top!
Class News
This term, our Reception explorers have been fully immersed in the wonders of the changing seasons. As Spring arrived, we spent time observing the vibrant new flowers blooming around school, which sparked a deep dive into the world of minibeasts. The children turned into mini-detectives during our outdoor minibeast hunts, showing incredible curiosity as they investigated our tiny neighbours. A particular highlight was our snail investigation, where the children researched what snails like to eat and even whipped up some creative "snail soup" in our outdoor kitchen! Back in the classroom, we have been busy refining our fine motor skills by cutting and painting to create our very own colorful minibeast masterpieces.
In our maths sessions, we have been building a strong foundation in number sense by exploring "more" and "less." The children have been busy building number staircases, noticing the "one more-ness" of each step as the towers grow taller. We even brought our learning to life using small world characters and teddies, who have been "climbing" the staircases to help us visualise how numbers increase in value. The children have also loved singing the numberblocks ‘part of me’ song to help us notice the different parts in numbers!
In literacy, the children have continued their journey through Phase 3 Phonics, showing great determination as they learn to decode and blend longer words. It has been wonderful to see this new knowledge in action as they begin to write lovely, complete sentences, using their phonics to express their own ideas on paper. This has showed in the amazing books they have written about celebrations!
To top off a fantastic term, we have been celebrating Easter with a fantastic egg hunt, searching high and low in our playground!
It has been a joy to see the children’s confidence and creativity grow alongside the garden this term!
What a fantastic term we’ve had! From diving deep into the oceans to exploring the coastlines of the world, the children have shown immense curiosity and creativity. It’s been a truly magical time, and we are constantly amazed by the boundless imagination on display in our classrooms.
We began our literary journey by diving into the rhyming world of Room on the Broom, alongside seasonal poems and rhymes. This sparked a newfound love for similes, which the children used to craft fiery dragon poems during our World Book Day celebrations, all inspired by the story Dragon Time Machine.
Recently, our focus shifted to non-fiction, guided by the wonders of The Big Blue Whale. The children put their zoologist skills to the test with a very "quirky" project! They let their imaginations run wild to create brand-new "mash-up" creatures, dreaming up wonderful animals like the "octo-cat" and the " Lion-quin."
Our young artists didn’t just stop at ideas. After sketching and painting their animals, masterfully exploring tints and shades, the children wrote imaginative information pages detailing their creatures' unique habits, from their love of slimy slugs to their secret habitats.
It has been a busy time for our budding mathematicians! We’ve been mastering the clock, focusing on identifying o'clock and half past times. The children are also becoming "Math Detectives," using their addition and subtraction skills to solve tricky real-world word problems.
We are now diving into the world of multiplication and division. By using hands-on resources, we are exploring how to make equal groups, use repeated addition, and share totals fairly. It is wonderful to see their confidence growing as they move from simple counting to these more complex concepts!
In science KS1 have been embracing the seasonal changes and enjoying the warmer weather, welcoming Spring with our new unit. The children have been focusing on key changes between each season and how this impacts animals and humans. They have been categorising months into seasons and exploring how/ why daylight hours change from month to month. They have enjoyed going on a Spring walk hunt identifying signs of the season has arrived!
In geography the children have been inspired by our coastal topic, investigating the powerful moment where the sea meets the land! The children have been fascinated to see how erosion shapes our shores, especially when comparing the iconic arch of Durdle Door in Dorset to the beautiful sands of Mombasa Beach in Kenya. It has been a joy to see their curiosity grow as they contrast our local landscapes with tropical coastlines.
PE - We’ve been so impressed by the children's resilience during this term’s PE focus on fundamental skills. Mastering the art of skipping is no easy feat, but through consistent weekly effort, they have vastly improved their coordination, timing, and stamina. We are incredibly proud of how their persistence has paid off, with many now skipping with newfound confidence and ease!
Cedar class have shown great resilience and confidence in logging onto a laptop, accessing google drive and a given assignment independently. They have been exploring the Paint.z programme to produce a digital painting. All are able to use a variety of online tools, change the colour and thickness of their tool. They will continue to explore this programme into Summer Term.
Elm and Hazel class have been working with a graph generating programme, which they have enjoyed getting stuck into. They have created a pictogram and bar chart this half term focusing on the topic of colour and animals. Each class were able to input data collected, label the X and Y axis, as well as giving the graph a title. The children have also gained confidence in using the Keyboard to delete, change letters from lowercase to uppercase, as well as using the space bar to input a space between words.
LKS2 wrapped up the Spring term with a wonderfully busy and exciting few weeks! It’s been fantastic to see such enthusiasm and progress across all areas of the curriculum.
In English, the class created imaginative and eye-catching travel leaflets, transporting us to magical destinations such as Aquarium Islands, Sunset Paradise, Planet World and even fiery volcano lands! They also explored poetry by writing thoughtful haikus inspired by the beauty of spring.
In maths, pupils strengthened their understanding of fractions, addition and subtraction, while continuing to build confidence in their multiplication skills in preparation for the June check.
Art lessons have been full of creativity, with a focus on developing drawing techniques. The children explored how artists use shape, practised shading to create different tones, and used careful observation to add detail to their work. They combined line, shape and tone to produce some truly imaginative drawings.
Science has been great fun, with the class diving into the fascinating world of the human body. They learnt about the skeleton and muscles, explored different food groups, and discovered how nutrition helps keep our bodies strong and energised.
In geography, pupils investigated settlements, land use and trade. They learnt why people choose to live in certain places, explored the history of early settlers at Skara Brae, and developed their map-reading skills using OS maps.
French lessons introduced new vocabulary to describe the weather, while music and circle time focused on the importance of kindness and friendship. In PE, the class enjoyed expressing themselves through dance.
It’s been a brilliant term full of curiosity, creativity and growth—well done, LKS2.
It has been an incredibly busy and productive half term in Upper Key Stage 2, and we are so proud of the dedication the children have shown across the curriculum. In English, the mystery of The Water Tower captured everyone's imagination, leading to some truly spine-tingling suspense stories, which were expertly followed by thought-provoking balanced arguments on complex topics like the ethics of keeping animals in zoos.
In maths children have been learning a variety of topics including the equivalence of fractions, decimals and percentages, coordinates, measures and negative numbers. Our Year 6 cohort once again blew us away with their resilience and "can-do" attitude during their recent assessments.
Science lessons took a literal turn into the heart of biology, where the children found the lamb’s heart dissection fascinating. Beyond the classroom, Year 5 enjoyed a fantastic trip to the zoo to gather facts firsthand. In our History lessons we have been shocked to discover the severity of Victorian discipline while studying crime and punishment through the ages. To top off a brilliant few weeks, our athletes represented the school with immense pride and sportsmanship in both netball and football competitions—well done to each and every one of them!
Our Upper Key Stage 2 pupils have also thoroughly enjoyed engaging in whole school events this half term, such as World Book Day, where they dressed up as book characters, created some fantastic artwork and loved inventing their own dragons. During science week, the BBC online live lesson was informative and engaging, whilst they were put through their paces thoroughly with an inspiring visit from Irish Olympic champion cyclist Alice Sharpe.
Our new after school sports club providers are running new clubs in the summer term. Book now to avoid disappointment.

A huge well done goes out to our KS2 pupils for their brilliant entries in the writers' competition
All of our Upper Key Stage 2 children took part in an essay writing competition with our Year 5 pupils writing an essay about someone who inspires them and our Year 6s taking part in an annual one, led by The Hoddesdon Rotary. Huge congratulations goes to our year 5 winners: Erika and Eddy. And of course not forgetting our incredible Year 6 writers, Aiyla, Dan, and Leo, for being selected as our school’s Year 6 finalists. Tasked with the inspiring topic of what they want to be when they grow up, these three talented pupils represented Roselands with pride during the presentation at Hoddesdon Library with the mayor. A special round of applause goes to Aiyla, who was selected as the overall Roselands winner and awarded a £25 book voucher.
