What's up at Roselands
This half term, some of the children in Sycamore class have come together to create a school newspaper. They have been busy writing their articles and are very proud to publish their first edition here. Please scan this QR code to see the first edition of WHAT'S UP AT ROSELANDS
Dear Parents and Carers,
As we come to the end of a very busy term it is good to reflect on all the things that we have accomplished at Roselands in the Autumn term. The children have been busy both in and out of class. As you read through, you will see a showcase of what our school offers to our wonderful Roselands children, whether it is through our high quality curriculum, or through the experiences and events we hold to help develop their confidence, personal development and well-being.
We are bidding a fond farewell to two members of staff at the end of this term: Mrs Lee one of our Midday Supervisors who has decided to dedicate more of her time to her hairdressing business and Mrs Fowler who has been a long term supply and has come to the end of her contract at Roselands. We thank both members of staff for their dedication to the school and wish them all the best for the future. We look forward to welcoming Miss Pickford, who will be working alongside Mrs Pullara in Hazel class, and Miss Perez, who will be supervising our children at lunchtimes, as part of our team.
In the new year please could I kindly ask that the children avoid bringing large backpacks to school. The cloakrooms have limited space and in the colder months, there is barely any space for large coats, scarfs, hats etc. These end up on the floor and as a trip hazard because the backpacks take up all the room. If they could use the thinner book bags, these can be stored in their trays in the classroom.
I am happy to announce that with the help of one of our parent governors, we have secured a grant for £1,000 this term. We will be spending it on equipment for wet play times and a table tennis table and equipment. This will be a fantastic addition to play and lunch times.
I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all of you for your continued support for our school. Our partnership really helps us to provide the very best education for our pupils. On a personal note, I would like to thank you for the warm welcome and support in my first term at Roselands. And on behalf of all of the staff, I would like to wish you a happy and restful holiday with family and friends - and a very merry Christmas to those of you who will be celebrating. I look forward to seeing you all again when school starts for the spring term on Tuesday 6th January 2026.
Warm regards

Children’s attitude to learning has been recognised through the collection of dojo points, which are then totalled as house points across the school. Every child continues to show their commitment to being Responsible, Respectful and Ready to Learn, earning points for themselves and their house. They are reset every month so at the end of December this is how the points stand:
1st: DAHL with 700 points
2nd: ELGAR with 936 points
3rd: TUDOR with 626 points
4th: DARWIN with 562 points
5th WENLOCK with 623 points
Congratulations to ELGAR house who have claimed the title for this half term! Everyone has worked hard on our values accruing over 5,000 points in just just over 6 weeks!
Let’s keep up the great work and continue to support each other as we aim for the top!
Our Learner Voice Council have met and decided how pupils would like to be rewarded for their individual efforts when they receive Dojos. They have created a sliding scale where the rewards get better, the more dojos you earn.
25 Dojo points = Receive a dojo sticker
50 Dojo points = Receive a raffle ticket that puts you in the running for a prize draw
75 Dojo points = Get 10 mins extra play
100 Dojo points = Come to school in your own clothes
150 Dojo points = Have a hot chocolate with Mrs Fowler
200 Dojo points = Choose the curriculum for your class for an afternoon
Class News
This term, Reception have been busy preparing and performing for their nativity show. Ash and Beech classes worked especially hard in learning all the songs, and put on a lovely performance for the rest of the school and their families!
We have also been exploring our creativity through lots of crafts this term, and have been getting into the festive spirit through decorating our classrooms!
The children have also completed the phase two phonics programme and have been using these phonemes to independently write words, sentences and ultimately stories. They have continued to explore the composition of numbers up to 5 and have created 'stampaline' pictures showing numbers up to 5, after being inspired by Number Blocks. Our theme has been celebrations around the world this term and we have been learning about how other cultures celebrate, particularly focusing on kindness.
We’re full of excitement for Winter and Christmas in Cedar Class. The children have thoroughly enjoyed being in our Christmas Post Office role play area, wrapping station and our room is filled with elves! In English this term we have been practising our sentence structure, by using our imaginations, to write exciting journeys on floating cloud buses or zooming jet powered skateboards to Rainbow Markets in the sky. We’ve then learned how to compose and write different forms of letters. We have linked our Geography topic on planet Earth with our English by writing postcards from a reindeer who accidentally landed in Africa! Whilst he enjoyed a holiday, he missed the cold of the North Pole! We’ve been learning lots of new songs this term; from the continents in Geography, ‘Oh you Lucky Duck’ to learn to spell could/would/should in phonics and our wonderful Christmas Concert songs - We are so proud of all the children for singing beautifully and playing their instruments in our concert. We’ve been enjoying lots of hands-on learning for our DT and outdoor learning topics this half term. In DT we’ve been investigating levers, leverages and pivots. The children have been building small scale levers with rulers and pencils investigating how moving the middle point changes the force. They’ve then taken it to a larger scale with planks of wood, tyres, flying leaves and working out where to place the fulcrum (middle point) to lift and move heavy pumpkins! We’ve also had great fun using pivots to create moving paper models.
Children in Elm class have worked extremely hard this half a term and should be proud of themselves for putting on a fantastic performance at the end of the term. They thoroughly enjoyed the panto and represented Roselands well with their fantastic behaviour.
This term, the children have especially loved exploring Planet Earth in Geography, discovering its amazing places, people, and natural wonders, they have shown great curiosity and enthusiasm throughout the topic
This term, the children have thoroughly enjoyed looking at the wonders of the natural protectors we have around us and our planet. They have immersed themselves in creating their own world heading towards a rainbow market, incorporating all of the new skills they have learnt this half a term (conjunctions, past tense using the suffix -ed, verbs, adjectives, nouns and noun phrases).
In Maths, they have been building their foundation knowledge of numbers and have enjoyed using the rekenrek during lessons.
Hazel class have had a wonderful half term filled with curiosity, creativity and teamwork. In Maths, the children have really enjoyed developing their number mastery using our new rekenreks, embedding key number concepts and working together to explore different strategies and deepen their understanding. In English, they have produced beautiful story writing inspired by Last Stop on Market Street, using expanded noun phrases and their fantastic imaginations to create truly wonderful innovations. Our Geography topic, Our Planet, has been a big highlight, with children showing great interest in the world around them. We are so proud of how hard they have worked to learn the songs and lines for our Christmas showcase assembly. We are very sad to say Goodbye to Mrs Fowler and will be making the most of the valuable time we still have together as a class before we embrace new beginnings in January. We wish all our families a wonderful Christmas and thank you all for your ongoing support.
Laurel Class have had a successful and creative second half of the Autumn term!
In English, they delved into narratives, using the books Starbird and Zeraffa Giraffa as inspiration before crafting their own imaginative animal journey stories. Our Maths focus was on strengthening multiplication and division strategies, including the use of arrays, and recently we introduced and explored different angles. Science saw us investigating Light, where children used torches to explore transparent, translucent, and opaque materials and examine the creation of shadows. Our Theme lessons transported us across the continent of Europe, locating and identifying key human and physical features in different countries. Children especially enjoyed taking a virtual trip to Venice, where they explored what makes the city so unique! We creatively continued our Prehistoric Art unit by taking the lessons outside to re-enact cave drawings on the playground and ended the unit by creating beautiful hand print cave wall-inspired paintings. Finally, children explored the workings of digital devices in Computing, practised balances and jumps in Gymnastics for PE, and learned vocabulary for clothes in French.
Maple Class wrapped up the second part of the Autumn term with a lot of exciting work and achievement!
In English, our students focused on becoming great writers, creating their own detailed animal journey stories after reading the books ‘Starbird’ and ‘Zeraffa Giraffa’,. They improved their writing skills by using descriptive noun phrases, adverbials and making sure they correctly punctuated when characters were speaking.
In Maths, we worked hard to improve addition and subtraction skills, and strengthened our multiplication and division methods, including learning how to use arrays. We also focused on sharpening multiplication skills in preparation for next year’s multiplication check for Year 4s.
This term, our students combined Computing and Art by exploring the question:
How does painting on a screen compare to painting with actual pastels?
The children created two art pieces of the same subject—one using digital painting software and one using colourful pastels. This led to a lively discussion about which method they preferred and which one they thought helped them be the most creative! Ultimately, Maple students produced some very expressive artwork.
Our Science lessons included fun, hands-on experiments about Light,. The children used torches to investigate how shadows are created using different materials (transparent, translucent, and opaque),.
Finally, we became 'globe-trotters': we explored Europe in Geography, learning about climate changes and the key physical and human features of various countries. The children really enjoyed a virtual trip to Venice, discovering what makes the city unique and studying special travel methods like the famous gondolas,. We also learned French vocabulary for describing clothes and giving opinions on them.
Pine Class wrapped up the Autumn term with an incredibly busy and productive second half! Our fantastic writers became literary masters in English, drafting thrilling animal journey stories inspired by books like 'Zerraffa Giraffa,' all while using expanded noun phrases, prepositional phrases, and perfectly punctuated speech. The Maths challenge involved tackling angles, strengthening our addition/subtraction skills, and drilling those multiplication tables to get ready for next year's check. Creativity shone brightly in Art as we turned into prehistoric cave artists, expertly using negative and positive space to create stunning drawings. In Science, we had a blast with hands-on investigations into Light, experimenting with torches and different materials (transparent, translucent, opaque) to uncover the secrets of shadow formation. Finally, we became globe-trotters: we learned French vocabulary for describing and giving opinions on clothes, and explored European Geography, studying climate variations and the unique travel methods, like the famous gondolas in Venice, Italy.
This half term, Sycamore class have enjoyed writing related to “The Promise” and maths learning about factors, multiples and prime numbers. In science, we learnt about mechanisms, and even created our own waving hands, using a lever. We enjoyed celebrating Friendship Week, which we started by wearing colourful odd socks, and making a pledge to use our power for good. Some children from Sycamore were very lucky to attend a multi-activity morning at Haileybury Turnford School, and enjoyed playing games such as balloon volleyball and beanbag hunt. Here’s wishing you all a merry christmas and a happy new year!
We would like to congratulate all of the children for their hard work and fantastic achievements this half term. Our theme topic this term, Frozen Kingdoms, has captured their imaginations. They produced wonderfully detailed and informative posters comparing the Arctic and Antarctica, and explored how animals adapt to survive in extreme climates.
In English, the children have loved writing their own stories inspired by The Promise. Their ideas, vocabulary, and growing confidence as writers continues to develop. In honour of Michael Rosen day the children wrote and performed their own food-themed poems, their performances were full of personality and energy!
In Maths, they continue to strengthen both arithmetic and reasoning skills, showing real resilience and determination. We have especially enjoyed celebrating each other’s progress during our daily times-tables sessions, which the children approach with great enthusiasm.
The children have also taken part in important lessons delivered by the NSPCC, they learnt about staying safe, who they can talk to and how to seek help when needed. We were very proud of the sensible discussions they contributed to. The children loved sharing their musical talents in class, celebrating each other’s musical skills! Our singers did a fantastic job performing Christmas carols in Hoddesdon Town Centre, spreading festive cheer!
Thank you for your continued support this term. We wish all of our Willow Class families a very Merry Christmas and a restful break.
What a wonderfully productive and engaging half-term it has been in Yew class. The children have demonstrated incredible focus and hard work when learning in all subjects, including `Theme` lessons (which are geography focussed at the moment and about The Frozen Kingdom) to building their vocabulary in French, learning dances in PE and of course not forgetting the development of their PSHE skills in weekly lessons and during Friendship Week.
In English, through the context of Remembrance Sunday, the children skillfully wrote and crafted their own beautiful cinquain poems. These five-line stanzas required precision and reflection, and the resulting work was incredibly moving. An inspiring online poetry workshop with the brilliant Michael Rosen, was also enjoyed by Yew Class this half term. The children were buzzing afterwards, writing and performing their own, fun witty poems with enthusiasm.
The children are becoming true masters of arithmetic in maths lessons. They have developed their efficiency and accuracy across a wide variety of skills, including formal methods for the four operations and fractions. They are showing growing confidence and fluency in tackling complex problems.
The children engaged maturely in a vital workshop led by the NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children), during which they learnt important messages about keeping safe, learning about who they can speak to and how to seek help.
Many children in Yew class have also thoroughly enjoyed taking part in other extra curricular activities, such as a cross country competition and more recently over half of the class made the visit to Hoddesdon Town Centre where they sang several Christmas carols, beautifully!
The children have accomplished a great deal this half-term and we are extremely proud of them. We wish all of our children and families a restful and very Happy Christmas.
The school has been filled with the beautiful sound of chldren's voices singing. EYFS treated us all to a wonderful performace of the Christmas story. The Mayor Cllr Patsy Spears, loved her visit to the school and meeting our school community. The KS1 performance taught about the different customs around the world at Christmas time. The children showed us their pieces of artwork and entertained us with songs.
Our musicians also delivered a showcase of their brilliant skills. We enjoyed listening to drumming, singing, guitars, flute, violin and piano pieces.
Our choir also sang carols in Hoddesdon Town Center.
The next FORS meeting will be on Monday 12th January 2026 6pm at The Sun pub. Come and join us for a drink and make friends. We encourage as many of you as possible to come. We are always looking for more committee members or just an extra pair of hands to help out at events. Every pupil in the school benefits from the efforts of FORS. We are currently working towards raising money for an outdoor library.
If you can spare any time please come and speak to us, we are a friendly bunch. Alternatively you can email us at roselandsfors@gmail.com
