Having a green card means you are a legal permanent resident of the United States. This is the second closest thing to being a citizen. With a green card, you will be able to live and work in the United States permanently. There are multiple eligibility categories for a green card:
Family
If you are the spouse of a U.S. citizen, child of a U.S. citizen, parent of a U.S. citizen, brother or sister of a U.S. citizen, spouse of an LPR, fiance of a U.S. citizen, widower of a U.S. citizen, or other qualifying categories, then you may be eligible for a green card.
Employment

Special Immigrant
If you are a religious worker, special immigrant juvenile, Afghanistan or Iraq national, international broadcaster, or an employee of an international company then you may be eligible for a green card as a special immigrant. (Schedule a consultation for more information.)
Refugee/Asylee Status
If you have been granted asylee status for over a year or if you were admitted as a refugee over a year ago, you may be eligible to apply for a green card.
Human Trafficking and Crime Victims
If you have a T nonimmigrant visa, a U nonimmigrant visa, or VAWA, you may be eligible for green card. (Victim of a crime or of domestic abuse while in the United States.)Â
