Now that we are back in the swing of things at school, I wanted to make you aware of an opportunity for All Middle School Students. Every year, the Iowa Choral Directors Association sponsors an Opus Honor Choir for Middle School students. This is a large honor choir made up of the best voices in the state. I know we have a lot of talent at Roland-Story and I like to provide students this optional opportunity to improve and gain confidence in their singing voices. We will rehearse the songs that they will use to audition and then have a couple of dates where we will record your student singing. Those recordings are then sent in for judges to evaluate. There are many students that enter and it is an honor to be chosen for OPUS. If your student is selected, there would be a concert held at CY Stephens on Thursday, Nov. 20th and your child would be performing.

Here’s what I would need from you, as the parent, in order for your child to participate in this opportunity:
● Transportation early to school on specific mornings (The schedule is below)
● Transportation back home after their performance at CY Stephens on the night of
Thursday, Nov 20th. CY Stevens is the performing arts center at Iowa State, in Ames.
(Only Parents are allowed to take their students home from the event)
● There may be a fee associated with students that are accepted. The school has taken
on this fee in the past, but if that is not the case this year it would be $45 per student.
Students will be receiving their music at the first rehearsal. Please enter by the art room doors.
As always, if you have any questions please feel free to contact me at
epeter@roland-story.k12.ia.us, I would be more than happy to visit with you. I’m very excited to
start rehearsals and get singing!
7th and 8th Graders - The schedule is as follows:
We will meet during Norse Strong in the Mornings - A more specific schedule to come later.
After auditions are graded, I will receive a list of the students accepted/denied and make that announcement. After they are accepted, they have more music to learn. Rehearsals for those will come soon
5th and 6th Graders - The schedule is as follows:
We will meet before school on MWF mornings to rehearse (there is no school transportation provided for these rehearsals). We will be rehearsing in the middle school music room.
One Important note - 5th and 6th Grade Boys:
5th and 6th Grade Male students that have already had their voice change (I will determine if this applies to your student) are now allowed to audition within the 7th and 8th Grade Tenor/Bass OPUS.
