At Roland-Story Middle School, choir is a standard-graded class and does count as part of a student’s GPA. I like to say, “since we do actual work, you get an actual grade.”
See a list of the standards that I grade your student on here.
Every trimester students will submit multiple SightReadingFactory assignments - this is a program that records the student's singing voice and grades pitch accuracy in real time, giving them a realisitic view of their singing ability. Students are expected to finish the assignments in a timely manner.
NB: It is important to note that at no point am I grading the “quality” of a student’s voice. What I am more interested in is accuracy.
After every concert, we evaluate our performance using the same rubric as the IHSMA Large Group contest judges. A copy of that sheet can be found here. Again, this is meant to give a standardized, objective view of what we’ve done and how we can improve.
The main method of class evaluation is the performance. Since it is not a replicable event, attendance is critical. Obviously things come up, and issues will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis at my discretion.
