Responsible Thinking Process

1 WHAT?

Rather than being a set of rules, the Responsible Thinking Process (RTP) is an attitude about how people act with others. It teaches students how to reach their goals without violating the rights of others. Through the questioning technique students are challenged to search within themselves and decide the way they want to be.

2 WHY?

The Responsible Thinking Process is designed to intervene before a student’s behaviour has a significant impact on others. When the process is used correctly it helps students stay engaged in the learning environment and to remain safe and respectful.

The Responsible Thinking Process also supports the student who chooses to disrupt to become more responsible within their lives.

3 HOW?

If a student disrupts the learning environment within a class they are given a set of questions. These questions act to remind the student of the classroom expectations, reflect on how their behaviour is affecting the environment and if they want to stay in class. If they disrupt for a second time they will be asked to go to the Responsible Thinking Classroom (RTC).

In the RTC, students think about what they have done and then try to think of other ways they can act so they can get what they want without violating the rights of others (disrupting the class).

This allows the student to reorganise their thinking and consider options for what they could do differently in class next time. Therefore taking responsibility for their behaviour and learning (higher order of thinking/PCT).
