What is School Counseling?

School counselors are trained professionals, credentialed by the state, similar to teachers, in the field of school counseling.

The goal of school counseling is to support students' academic, social, emotional, and personal development by offering a variety of services on campus.

Through classroom guidance, small groups, individual services, and daily interactions, school counseling helps students better understand themselves, manage their emotions, develop strategies for academic success, and build a toolkit for handling daily challenges and conflicts.

School Counseling VS Outside Therapy

School counselors meet with students individually or in groups to address crisis management, skill-building, and problem-solving, supporting their success at school.

An outside therapist provides more intensive, individualized, and ongoing therapy.

Conversations between a school counselor and a student are confidential, except when there is a safety concern that requires breaking confidentiality.
