I am Mrs. Laura Benkovich. This is my 9th year in the role of Reading Specialist at WPES, which happens to be my dream job! I will be working with 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade students every day in their assigned reading classes. Your child is one of the lucky students who will benefit from being in a co-taught reading class. That means, during reading, there will be two teachers in class, working together, to make this the best year yet! If you have a question about your child’s reading progress, you can contact either reading teacher. We are both getting to know your child as a reader, planning lessons, setting goals, and teaching reading together. My other duty as a reading specialist involves giving extra support to students who are still developing as readers. I am excited to give extra support and encouragement to those who need it in a small group setting outside the normal reading time.
I have previously taught 3rd grade and 4th grade at Whitman Post. Previous to WPES, I taught 5th grade at a school in a suburb of St. Paul, Minnesota. I have two reading teacher endorsements, as well as a reading specialist K-12 endorsement, and I am a certified dyslexic practitioner through the Wilson Reading System.
As well as a resource to students and teachers, I am also here to help families encourage their children to become lifelong readers. If you ever need to contact me, you can call the school at 815-624-4006 or send an email, benkovichl@rockton140.org. I have a website that I add to throughout the year, so please feel free to check it often. Currently, you can find reading resources that we use in school and other sites that pertain to reading. Please explore the site and let me know if you have any questions or suggestions on how to make this site a better resource for all of us. https://sites.google.com/rockton140.us/wpesreads/home
Take care and keep reading!
