Growing Roots is run by our Rock Prairie Middle School students. We chose our name because it reflects how this middle school has planted roots and is growing them up and out.
Growing Roots, our Montessori Middle-School owned enterprise, specializes in selling handcrafted skincare products and farm based goods to our local communities while we learn valuable entrepreneurial skills.
The Growing Roots Team
Although we all work together on all aspects of our business, we have groups for each job. The heads of the departments are in charge of making sure everything in their group goes smoothly.
The general manager is the student who makes sure that the entire business is running smoothly, including making sure all branches of the business are coordinating well with one another. The general manager also leads a branch of their own.
The marketing leader works on designing and creating packaging, decides on scents and shapes of products, looks at data to conclude what items are most popular, and advertises, including flyers and this website!
The head of production directs all production. They supervise the crafting of the products and assist in the creations themselves. The production leader often works with marketing to decide on what items to make each production day, and what scents and shapes should be made.
The purchasing supervisor works with the accountant and general manager to decide what purchases are important, which items can wait to be ordered, and how to save on the purchases. They also place purchase orders.
The accountant calculates costs, selects prices, leads the discussions on deciding what to do with profits, and oversees profits and expenses. They also work with the general manager and purchaser to decide on purchases.
The buildings and grounds director controls all elements of the facilities outside. They head the building projects to expand our outside area to what currently houses chickens, honey bees, and a material shed, and hopefully will one day house goats and garden beds. In the future, we hope to use our own beeswax and goats' milk in soaps and balms. Our mini farm operation also allows us to practice skills including gardening and taking responsibility for animals.
The farm manager heads the care of the animals. Their tasks cover selecting the critters we own, supervising their care, and working with the buildings and grounds director to make sure all their spaces are comfortable. Currently, we do not have any gardens, but we do have chickens and bees!

"It has been amazing to work with the middle school students on their Growing Roots project. They have been wonderfully engaged, inquisitive and truly enthusiastic about learning the ins and outs of beginning and running an enterprise."
