Look at the objects here. Name each one. What letter is first in the word? What sound do you hear? What sounds do you hear at the end of the words? What sound do you hear in the middle of the words?
Do you have some letters around the house? On your refrigerator or in your room? You can write some letters on a piece of paper. Now put the letters together. How many words can you make?
Here is an excellent website that lists sounds and how different they are from each other in words. If the words differ with only one letter, we call these minimal pairs. Activities like this help children realize how words change and how new words are created. You can say these words that differ in one sound to your child. Ask them if they hear what sound is different. Ask them what sounds they hear.
