Mr. G has been teaching at Rockbridge County High School since 2013. During this time, he has taught a range of different courses in the History/Social Science Department, including Honors World History II, World History II, United States/Virginia Government and Politics, 20th Century American History, and World Geography.
Mr. G’s staple has been Advanced Placement United States Government and Politics, a class he has been teaching for 13 years. Since 2013, he has taught 295 students who have gone on to take the end of course exam offered by the College Board. 92.5 % of his students have passed the exam while earning an average score of 4.22 out of 5.00. In 2014, one of his students received a perfect score on the College Board exam. He also has participated in the College Board’s AP U.S. Government Reading during four summers from 2019-2025.
In 2025, Mr. G redesigned the AP Government curriculum at RCHS to include both AP U.S. Government and Politics in the fall semester and AP Comparative Government and Politics in the spring semester. The AP Comparative GOPO course had never been taught at RCHS prior. The addition of this course, while obviously expanding the school's AP Curriculum, provided students with RCHS's first ever political science elective.
In 2019, he designed and began teaching a new semester elective for RCHS called "Introduction to World Religions." The class is designed to allow students to have a more in-depth exploration of a variety of religions traditionally only skimmed over in the general education curriculum. This class is currently paired with "20th Century American History," a course taught by Ms. Williamson.
Since 2022, Mr. G was able to add an additional advanced course to his teaching schedule: Advanced Placement World History-Modern. 11 students have gone on to take the AP Exam. 100 % of his students have passed the exam while earning an average score of 4.64 out of 5.00.
In addition to his teaching, Mr. G has also been involved in a variety of activities at RCHS. Since 2014, he has sponsored the school’s Model United Nations organization. The organization has proudly sent students to participate in annual conferences, including large conferences at Old Dominion University and the University of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. At times he has also volunteered his time to sponsor student-run clubs, including the Inter-Club Council and the Multicultural Student Union.
With other coworkers, he also helped chaperone non-school sponsored travel experiences on six occasions. On these trips RCHS students have collectively visited 15 countries (Austria, Belgium, England, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Northern Ireland, San Marino, Scotland, Switzerland, Wales),
During five summers he helped with the development of the department’s curriculum resources, and for four years, he served as the high school’s representative on the Superintendent’s Forum.
He has been honored to nominated for the Wildcat Inspiration Awards in 2019 and 2022, and being selected as the winner in 2019 after being nominated by two students. During his first year as a teacher, he was nominated for Teacher of the Year. His teaching style attempts to draw attention to critical thought, social justice, and reflection.
He graduated Summa Cum Laude with his B.A. degree in History/Political Science from Bridgewater College with a certification in Secondary Education and a minor in theatre in 2011. He was awarded with the Dr. David McQuilkin Scholarship as well as The Daniel W. Bly-Lamar B. Neal History and Political Science Outstanding Senior Award. During his undergraduate studies he participated in the Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Society, the Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society, the Alpha Psi Omega Theatre Honor Society (serving as Secretary/Treasurer and Vice President), the Alpha Chi National Honor Society, and the Philomathes Honors Society. For three years, he served as the Education Coordinator on the Student Service Board. He was very active on campus with the school’s theatre program (participating in around a dozen productions, serving a President and Treasurer of the drama club, and working as the Theatre Department’s Student Assistant). He also actively sang in multiple choirs on campus. Some of these choirs participated in tours throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region and one group even brought their musical talents to Scotland and Ireland the summer of 2011.
In 2013, he received his M.A. in History from James Madison University. He concentrated in World History, focusing specifically on British imperialism and its effect on the socialization of children into “Citizens of the Empire.” He presented his research at multiple conferences including the 43rd Annual Popular/American Culture Association National Conference in Washington D.C., the Midwest Popular/American Culture Association Annual Conference in Columbus, Ohio, the New York State Association of European Historians Annual Meeting in Oswego, New York, the Transporting Bodies and Minds: 18th and 19th Century Travel Conference in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and the Southeast World History Association Annual Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. He worked as a Graduate Assistant and Teaching Assistant, assisting professors with intro sections of Modern World History and American History.
In his spare time, Mr. G has traditionally devoted his time to the arts. He was exceptionally involved in community theatre during his childhood years, which led to such an active involvement during his undergraduate studies. Perhaps his favorite role was playing Father Flynn in John Patrick Shanley’s Doubt: A Parable for which he was nominated for an Irene Ryan Acting Award. In addition, with few exceptions, Mr. G has proudly been involved in some sort of organized chorus every year since the sixth grade. He currently sings baritone for the Rockbridge Chorus, an organization he has happily been a part of since 2013.
As of August 2025, Mr. G has earned Platinum Trophies on 35 games played on his various PlayStation consoles. For non-gamers, think of a Platinum Trophy as being the ultimate representation of completing a game and mastering its various challenges. Earning them is considered a feat in the gaming world, with generally under 5% of players of successfully doing so.
Some of his most recent include:
Star Wars Outlaws (April 2025)
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor (January 2025)
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (December 2024)
Gotham Knights (May 2024)
Stray (March 2024)
His rarest Platinum Trophy was earned for Star Wars: Squadron in 2021. It has only been earned by 0.1% of players of the game.
Mr. G is a lover of science fiction and fantasy. His favorite books growing up were the Harry Potter series. In the evening you might find him geeking over some of his favorite franchises, which include the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars, and the Dark Knight Trilogy. It would not take you long to find a giant and friendly Pikachu in his classroom.
Mr. G currently lives in Rockbridge County with his partner, Ms. Leverett, her spunky cocker spaniel, Willow, and her cat, Arthur. Ms. Leverett teaches art and is the head cheerleading coach at Waynesboro High School.
