Academically or Intellectually Gifted (AIG) students perform or show the potential to perform at substantially high levels of accomplishment when compared with others of their age, experiences or environment. Academically or Intellectually Gifted students exhibit high-performance capability in intellectual areas, specific academic fields, or in both the intellectual areas and specific academic fields. Academically or Intellectually Gifted students require differentiated educational services beyond those ordinarily provided by the regular educational program. Outstanding abilities are present in students from all cultural groups, across all economic strata, and in all areas of human endeavor. Article 9B (N.C.G.S. § 115C-150.5)
Gifted Characteristics of AIG (Academically & Intelligently Gifted) students
Each gifted child has his/her own unique traits. There are many traits that these students have in common, but no gifted learner exhibits traits in every one of these ways. This is a list of traits, strengths, and possible problems that AIG students could exhibit.

Pathways to AIG Student Identification
Academically Gifted Requirements: (AR, AM, AG)
Pathway 1: Students must meet two of the three requirements: successful completion of a portfolio (non-traditional measure), have a minimum score of 85th percentile on an EOG, and/or 85th percentile on a CogAT in one or both areas. Partial composite scores can be used.
Pathway 2: Students need to have a minimum score of 90th percentile on an EOG or on a CogAt in one or both areas. Partial composite scores can be used.
Pathway 3: Students need to have a minimum score of 88th percentile on an EOG or on a CogAt in one or both areas and perform at a high level on a performance task (non-traditional measure). Partial composite can be used.
Academically and Intellectually Gifted Requirements: (AI)
Pathway 4: Students need to have a minimum score of 95th percentile on a CogAt in one or more areas (AI). Partial composite can be used.
