Our Mission

The Department of Music, Theatre and Dance seeks to provide an aesthetic education for all students. Its vision extends outward to the campus and local communities in a quest for artistic truth, bringing richness to life through the performing arts. Students practice their craft in community with faculty, staff and other students in an environment that encourages students to consider their vocation as service in God’s world. A strong foundation in the liberal arts emphasizing critical thinking, effective communication and scholarly research provides graduates with real-world marketable skills and excellent preparation for graduate studies. Year-round opportunities for students to perform, design and direct, mentored by faculty and other local professionals, broadens the depth of experience of our students, preparing them to become professionals in their respective fields.

Our Programs

Students may pursue the following programs at Rochester University:

UnCovered Theatre: Professional Mentorship

Rochester University is one of the few institutions of higher learning in the country to own and operate a professional theatre company in which students participate in all aspects of theatre while working toward their bachelor’s degree. UnCovered Theatre Company members work alongside RU Theatre students as actors in co-productions, professional mentors for student interns, and professors, designers or directors in the college’s academic program. The unique partnership allows Rochester University Theatre to rival much larger colleges and universities in both quantity and quality of performance and program offerings, yet still offer the benefits of the close-knit Christian learning community. The UnCovered Theatre Mission Statement is: “To offer hope, shed light on the human condition, and uncover goodness, truth and beauty through our art.”

Theatre for Social Engagement

Theatre for Social Engagement educates our audiences about how the stories we share on stage intersect with the world around us. The lecture series raises awareness about specific real-world issues related to each of our four mainstage productions. Service learning initiatives and projects give students the opportunity to help shape the world around them by serving groups impacted by issues related to themes in our productions.

Partnership with MPI

Rochester University is proud to have recently partnered with MPI. For details about that partnership, click here!
