For more than a century, Physical Education (PE) has been a fundamental part of the public school curriculum. Physical Education (Phys. Ed. or P.E.) or is sometimes referred to as Gym Class is a course traditionally taken during the primary and secondary years of a child’s education. It may also be the only instruction students receive in regards to how to be an effective, safe and successful mover.
The National Association for Sport and Physical Education’s most basic definition of a physical educated person is one who has learned skills necessary to perform a variety of physical activities.
What is known, is that Physically Active and educated children are more likely to thrive academically and socially because students who are physically active tend to have better grades, school attendance, cognitive performance, and classroom behaviors.

Exercise Time is a vital part of our gym class, serving as an energizing launch for the day’s activities. This space is thoughtfully designed to encourage all students to participate fully, regardless of their fitness level. It’s all about flexibility—everything adapts to fit each person’s unique journey.
By incorporating fun visuals and multimedia, we create an engaging environment that inspires students to explore a variety of activities beyond just traditional sports. Exercise Time empowers teachers to recognize when students need extra support and highlights those who could benefit from some added attention.
In this dynamic atmosphere, students dive into activities that capture their interests, whether it’s shooting hoops, hula hooping, balancing on beams, jump roping, or striking a heavy bag. Each child has the opportunity to pursue what excites them, making movement not about obligation but joy and discovery.
This time is about more than just play; it's an opportunity for real connections with young learners. As educators, we navigate the space, observing and actively engaging with the students. Through questioning and exploring together, we create meaningful learning experiences.
In physical education, it’s crucial to go beyond teaching lessons and maintaining order. We must genuinely connect with students—interacting with individuals and groups throughout the session.
The integration of Exercise Time has proven to be an invaluable teaching tool. It captures those precious moments of learning in real-time, guiding us in understanding how much and how well students are learning together and as individuals.
Participating alongside the kids in these activities is fulfilling and inspiring. While it’s important to provide guidance, it’s equally essential to let them take the lead and respect their choices during this time. By doing so, we cultivate a creative space where their decision-making can flourish.
