We have a strict attendance policy for driver education. The State of Vermont requires students to receive 30 hours of classroom instruction, 6 hours of driving instruction, and 6 hours or observing driving instruction. If these requirements are not met, the course doesn't count, and students cannot receive a passing score for the course.
OVUHS has sceduled more than the minimum class instruction time, providing just over 33 hours of instruction.
If a student misses more than three (3) class days worth of instruction, they will be automatically unenrolled from the course and will not receive credit.
Driving days can be more flexible. However, it is the student's responsibility to notify the instructor as early as possible about missing the scheduled drive. If a student misses enough scheduled driving times, it may result in not receiving enough driving intruction or observation time to pass the course.
**Excused and unexcused absences are treated the same when tracking missed class time. It is missed class time.**
We will strive to meet the educational needs of every student. However, the laws surronding the requirements for successfully completing driver education are clear: students must meet the time requirements of the course.
As you have probably seen many times from administration, students who are fully vaccinated do not need to quarantine if they are identified as close contacts. Also, there are no hybrid teaching/learning options available this year.
Excused and unexcused absences are treated the same when tracking missed classtime.

All the regular protocols apply with an excused absence. However, if they are missing class or driving time, it still counts against the student. This is becuase the State of Vermont mandates that students receive specific amounts of instruction.
The first 2 weeks of the semester you have class daily (both A and B days!). It is different from any other course we offer. After the first two weeks, you will have one class day and one driving day. The other three days the instructor will be driving with other students, so you will need something in your schedule for those three days.
Options for opposite Driver's Ed:
1.OV Cooperative (this is basically a TA position with a teacher in the building. The student finds the TA position. This is a small way a student gains experience in searching for a job).
2. During blocks that Band or Senior Chorale are offered a music student can be in music.
3. Students who have previously accessed either the Learning Center or Academic Resource Center may take these opposite Driver's Ed.
4. Students can also access a .5 credit online course through VTVLVC.ORG if they wish to take another course opposite Driver's ed. Be sure to sign up for a "traditional" course and communicate with both your school counselor and Ms. King.
We will work with students at all experience levels, but we do ask that students have some on-the-road driving experience before the start of the class. OVUHS is located on route 7 and our first driving experiences in the class begin and end with turning on route 7. They should feel comfortable making these maneuvers, knowing there will be other students in the car, when they register for the course.
We strive to maintain a schedule that allows students to complete all of the driving during their class time. This is why it is important for students to be present in school on their scheduled driving days. Instruction outside of the school day is generally not available.
Each student will be assigned driving partners and a specific driving day. The driving day will remain the same each week unless otherwise noted.
In addition to the driving students do with driver education, students must log a total of 40 hours of driving with a licensed driver before they can take their license road test. 10 of these 40 hours must be night time driving as well. Please check the home page for more links about this and the link to RoadReady, the DMV app for loggin hours.
Nope, your student can log their hours on a paper chart. The chart can be found on the DMV website or in the Parent Supervision Guide which is linked on the homepage. Students can also print out the log from RoadReady and fill it out by hand. Students will need to bring a paper print of their driving log to the DMV when the take their road test.
Yes, students must have driving partners. We schedule students to drive in groups of three students and the instructor.
We do not have the ability to offer individual instruction here at OVUHS. If this is an issue, the DMV maintains a list of private driving schools in the state. You may wish to reach out to a few of these companies and see if they can better accomodate your needs.
