Tobacco-Free Schools Policy Checklist

1) Review How District Policies Work and Example Policies

• Familiarize yourself with how district policies function and review example Tobacco-Free Schools policies. 

2) Assemble a Diverse Team to Complete the Checklist

• Include representatives such as a district or school wellness team, school resource officer, staff who address mental health, school nurses, coaches, health teachers, community partners, local public health agencies, students and families.

Collaborative efforts between education and public health sectors enhance the effectiveness of policy assessments and implementations. 

3) Complete the Policy Language Checklist 

• Policy Language Checklist, including state law and best practices. 

  • Make a copy of the Checklist. This will become your own editable document.

  • Answer Yes or No to each item and document notes. 

• After completion, discuss potential actions to address identified gaps.
