Tools and strategies to assist Colorado local public health agencies and schools with implementing equitable policies and practices
Schools, public health agencies, community partners, youth, and families all play a role in creating tobacco-free and nicotine-free school environments.
Success depends on strong communication and consistent implementation of supportive policies and practices.
Schools are uniquely positioned to address youth use of tobacco and nicotine products, including vapes, e-cigarettes, and nicotine pouches.
This Take Action Toolkit is designed for both education and public health professionals to help identify and apply best practices for promoting tobacco-free and nicotine-free schools.
The Toolkit builds on guidance from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment to support schools in prevention, response, and policy efforts.
This toolkit offers flexible, complementary actions that support a comprehensive and equitable approach.
There is no required order-schools, districts, and community partners are encouraged to choose the actions that best align with their local priorities and start where it makes the most sense.
Use the menu on the left to explore each section of the toolkit.
Note: In this toolkit, the term "tobacco" includes all forms of tobacco and nicotine use, such as vaping and nicotine pouches.
This toolkit was developed by RMC Health based on years of work done across the country in school tobacco prevention and control. Funding for this toolkit was made possible by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s State Tobacco Education & Prevention Partnership (STEPP).
