2024 – 2025 English 9 Overview*

Throughout the year, we will be examining the question of how fear can affect youth in society.

Quarter 1:

• Introductory Speech: “Me in a Bag”

• Building Literary Base – The Hunger Games Book Study

  • View Prequel of The Hunger Games to gain insight on how fear was utilized to ‘start’ a society

• Building Non-Fiction Comprehension

• Writing: Journaling and intro to analysis paper

• Vocabulary Study – Quiz every other Friday

• AR conferences Weeks 7 & 8

Quarter 2:

• Building Literary Base - Native American Short stories

• Building Literary Base – Lord of the Flies Book Study

  • Compare dystopian societies and examine influence of works of literature on one another

• Building Non-Fiction Comprehension

• Writing: Journaling, Creative writing

• Vocabulary Study – Quiz every other Friday

• AR conferences Weeks 15 & 16

Quarter 3:

• Building Literary Base – Continue Lord of the Flies

• Building Non-Fiction Comprehension

• Writing: Journaling and compare/contrast analysis paper

• Vocabulary Study – Quiz every other Friday

• AR conferences Weeks 21 & 22 and 27 &28

Quarter 4:

• Building Literary Base – Romeo and Juliet

  • Study Life of Shakespeare 

  • Read play aloud in class

  • View version of play

  • Understand relevance and references today

• Building Non-Fiction Comprehension

• Writing: Journaling and citations from plays

• Vocabulary Study – Quiz every other Friday

• AR conferences Weeks 33 & 34
