Elementary Math Programming

The River Vale School District uses heterogeneous grouping (non-leveled classes) for mathematics instruction in grades K-5, with an ongoing focus on differentiation within the classroom and problem-solving. However, enriching opportunities are available for students as highlighted below:

Grade 3 - Continental Math

Grade 4 - Continental Math Club (Volunteer); Enrichment Math (Selection Process)

Grade 5 - Enrichment Math/Math Olympiads (Selection Process)

In addition, the district currently has an enrichment opportunity for high-achieving fourth and fifth-grade math students in a weekly pull-out format hosted by Mr. Beyer and Mr. Mitchell. Students are assessed on a rubric utilizing a combination of the following criteria, which was constructed similarly to the rubric used at Holdrum Middle School for enrichment mathematics in sixth grade:

  • Teacher recommendations based on a rubric with an emphasis on problem-solving

  • End-of-year assessment

  • Inview test of quantitative reasoning

  • Linkit! Math assessment results
