AVID is a program designed to help students who want to go to college and explore careers, get accepted to college, and understand how to afford college or even technical schools.
AVID is typically a four-year elective program in high school, but students may apply to enter the program at any grade level (if we have available spaces).
8th graders apply to the program through their 8th grade AVID class or the online application at bit.ly/applyramonaAVID. Once they have completed the application, they should also select AVID as their elective choice. If students need extra room in their schedule for other electives, they can take P.E. at a different time (ways to fulfill the PE requirement: take 7th period PE as a member of a sports team with practice after school, take ROTC, which counts as PE, take marching band, which counts as PE, take summer school PE, etc.)
Currently, we have 535 students in AVID, which is approximately 25% of the school population.
We have two counselors who work full-time with our AVID students to provide guidance and opportunities.
We have a staff of 25 college tutors to provide support for our students.
We have 14 dedicated AVID teachers to support our students.
All AVID seniors apply to multiple colleges and universities and apply for financial aid and scholarships.
We strive to
Provide students with academic instruction, tutoring, guest speakers, field trips, and other support in preparation for eligibility to enter a four-year university.
Improve students' academic, study, planning, and organization habits.
Guide students in completing the A-G and other requirements for admission to University of California and California State Universities, as well as the most competitive universities in the country.
Motivate students to seek higher education and set high goals for themselves.
Increase students' understanding of different career paths and college.
Increase students' understanding of applying for financial aid and scholarships.
Encourage students to be involved in their community and extracurricular activities.
Create a fun and supportive environment of like-minded students who want to succeed.
Do you

Have a 2.5 G.P.A. and above, or want to improve your GPA? (*Students must earn a minimum of 2.5 to be eligible for Cal States and a minimum of 3.0 to be eligible for UCs. For competitive schools, students should aim much higher.)
Want to join the AVID family, make friends, and learn about life after high school?
If yes, please apply!
*AVID is a college prep elective class and will be one of your classes next year if you are selected for the program. If you are concerned about fitting AVID into your schedule, you may request summer school to create more room in your schedule for AVID during the year.
Our schedule for the week:
Mondays: Guest speakers or class curriculum
Tuesdays: Tutorial study group
Wednesdays: Class curriculum
Thursdays: Tutorial study group
Fridays: Class curriculum
Class curriculum is different for each grade level and includes topics like the exploration of interests and careers, building better study habits, SAT prep, college research and exploration, financial aid information and applications, completing college applications, understanding pathways after high school, developing and writing personal essays for college, applying for scholarships, building a growth mindset, developing habits of personal success in and beyond school, first-generation tips and support, games, and more. We are here to support you as you grow, explore, and make friends. Although we are a college prep program, even if you ultimately decide to not go to college, we are here to provide you with choices for your life. When you graduate, we want you to be able to choose a four-year university, community college, career or technical school, military, or career and know how to afford those choices and not be stuck without options.
We want to give our students many opportunities to develop their character, grit, and interests.
We encourage students to go on field trips and do extra curricular activities like clubs, volunteer work, and sports.
AVID is what you make out of it with your determination!
Our AVID group participates in Keep Riverside Clean and Beautiful project and has adopted the portion of Magnolia in front of the school. From 2021-2023, we won their Outstanding Litter Prevention Award.
We also encourage students to join the school's AVID Club for extra leadership experience.
Every year, we have a fundraiser to help support our program. Our fundraising efforts go toward field trip costs, senior banquet, senior graduation sashes, and supplies for all students.
We also work to provide scholarships for students through alumni and other contributions.
