The Riverside Reading Team, made up of Emma Byrne ('24), Steven Fuentes Perez ('26), Ivy Gao ('26), Gabrielle Jordan ('26), Mackenzie Keller ('26), Liam MacBrien ('27), Madison McDermott ('27), Amylynn Nemergut ('25), Emma Ponas ('25), Sarah Wolfe ('24), and Lucas Velez ('27), recently finsihed Top 4 in the Reading Competition.
After an incredible performance over a zoom call in the Scholastic Commons with over 30 questions out of 40 answered correctly, the Viking Readers found out they advanced to the NEIU to compete against the other top schools from the area.
Unfortunately, the team was unable to come out on top but they competed hard in all 3 rounds. After the competition, the team was invited to the Scholastic Awards Program that will be held on Thursday May 9 to be recognized for their accomplishments. The fourth place finish is the best in Riverside's history in the competition.
The Riverside Reading Team is advised by Mrs. Christina McDermott.

Riverside hosts two blood drives every year through Miller-Keystone. In this past blood drive, they had 28 donors with their goal being 30. The number of donors are rising with every blood drive so make sure you go and donate at our next one next year. The dates are 10/24/24 and 3/11/25. They keep the snacks stocked and the drinks cold, perfect for someone donating blood. A bonus is you get out of class to do this good deed. You also get to pick what time you would like to donate, that would best go with your schedule. You must be 16 years old or older to donate. If you are 16 and would like to donate make sure you get a permission slip because you need a parent signature.

On April 26, Ms. Morgan Mickavicz's Mass Media class, Ms. Frances O'Shea's Creative Writing class, and Mr. Jamie Trescavage's Mass Media Club headed to Wilkes University to hear about careers in journalism and other media. The 23rd Tom Bigler Journalism & Media Conference, run by Dr. Kalen Churcher, featured various guest speakers discussing opportunities in the media fields of journalism, advertising, social media, marketing, and broadcasting. The goal of the speakers was to explain why they chose to be in this field in the first place and what opportunities were available for students in the future.
One session of the conference featured the Wilkes University Speech and Debate team. The Speech and Debate team talked about what they do in their club, and how much they like it, and how it helped them throughout their college career.
After going on this trip, the 22 students learned about new opportunities from each person they met there. The speakers, professors, and college students not only talked about journalism, but also gave great advice regarding career decisions for the future.
The key note speakers were Amy Dilger and Kelly Dessoye, who run a local journalism website called Focus Journalism. The site blends Dilger's photo journalism with Dessoye's videography to share unique stories about real people in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
Other speakers included WVIA journalist Kat Bolus, representatives of a community non-profit organization called NeighborWorks Northeastern Pennsylvania, representatives of the DiscoverNEPA website, WBRE/WYOU/PAhomepage.com reporter Andy Mehalshick, editor of the Times Leader newspaper Joe Soprano, and Kristina Knight, the senior director of partnership, management & marketing for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders (and a proud 2001 Riverside graduate).
