On April 19th, students in Riverside's English as a Second Language (ESL) program attended a field trip at the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour located at McDade Park in Scranton. Students were able to experience a day in the life of a coal miner.
Shashla Gisbel enjoyed the trip, and was amazed that small boys would open the door to the mine for the men. She stated, "Cuando estabamos gon el niño que estaba con su comida y cuando estabamos en la ultima parte (When we were with the kid that was with his food and when it was the last part)."
Retired Riverside history teacher, Bob Davis, served as the group's tour mine guide.
Ms. Kristen Petrucci is Riverside's ESL teacher.

Members of the 2023-2024 Riverside Ski Club enjoyed the beautiful ski mountain of Belleayre in upstate New York on March 4, 2024.
It has been approximately 15 years since the Club has gone on an out-of state ski trip. 40 people, including members of the club and chaperons, attended the trip.
According to Riverside Ski Club advisor, Mrs. Dawn Chilek, "Belleayre Mountain was an excellent new adventure for the ski club!"
Many members of the club agree with her and were very excited about the trip. Chilek believes this will be a new beginning for an old tradition. "The future of the ski club looks bright," she continued, mentioning possible day trips in 2025 to Belleayre Mountain and another New York resort, Hunter Mountain.
In addition, Chilek mentioned that she will be looking into a 2 night, 3 day trip to a Vermont resort like Killington or Sugarbush for February of 2025. With so many exciting opportunities on the horizon, she encourages any skiers or snowboarders to join the Riverside Ski Club for the 2024-2025 season to experience what the club has to offer.

Did you know that a turtle lives in the pond in the courtyard located in the back of the school? Our little friend does not have an "official" name. Please submit a school appropriate name by May 24th at 3pm. The names will be narrowed down to a top five and there will be a vote before the end of the school year. The student or staff member who submits the winning name, will receive a $25 Starbucks gift card! That sounds like a SHELL of a DEAL!

Members of the Riverside Key Club—Leah Pfeiffer ('24), Starlette Cabral ('24), Anavi Nieves ('26), and Jessdaly Torres ('26)—attended the Key Leader Conference in Reading, Pennsylvania from April 12-14. Over the weekend, the students had the opportunity to live in cabins, meet new people from schools across the state, learn about leadership skills, and compete in team building games and activities. One of these activities included swinging on ropes to try to land on a platform, which the team successfully completed. At the end of the weekend, the members received certificates and bid their goodbyes, but as Sophomores, Torres and Nieves plan to attend next year.
