As part of our focus as a STEM school, we have an at-home monthly/quarterly challenge. These projects aim for scholars and their families to engage in the design process at home. Most homeroom teachers offer an incentive for participating, like extra credit, free missing assignments, and homework passes (ask your scholar’s homeroom teacher what incentive they offer). Also, some projects will even be entered into a competition with awards and prizes!
Do I need to spend a lot of money on supplies?
No. Projects are designed to use items you already have at home, such as cardboard and recyclables. Also, scholars can get supplies from Ms. White (if available).
How many projects are there throughout the school year?
Four. There is a project due at the end of each quarter.
What if we can't decide what to do for our project?
You have a lot of options. You can email Ms. White at tara.white@riverrougeschools.org or contact your scholar's homeroom teacher for ideas. This website is another resource. Videos and ideas are posted for each specific project. You can also use Google or another AI platform to ask for help with ideas. These projects are intended to be a little challenging and draw out your creativity.
What if my scholar has a project due in another class around the same time as the At-home Family STEAM Challenge?
This may happen. Scholars are given a flyer with instructions and due dates for all of the At-home Family STEAM Challenge projects at the beginning of the school year and at least a month before each due date. It is up to you and your family to manage your time to complete projects and assignments.
