Students are encouraged to make good choices within safe boundaries. They are given opportunities to resolve conflicts effectively and taught the skills of self-expression and listening through both the curriculum and the approach to them modelled by staff.
Discussion is used as a learning experience in a wide range of lessons. Through discussion, students are encouraged to develop their views on wide-ranging issues and learn to express themselves without fear of ridicule. Many students at Riverbank literally find their voice with us with the support of our speech and language team enabling communication barriers to be lowered and overcome.
As students develop and demonstrate their understanding of safety in school their opportunities widen and students explore their freedoms and liberties in wider contexts. A great example of this is reflected in our outdoor learning programme which is outlined below.
As part of the PSHCE curriculum, at KS3 students study ‘My Choices, My Rights’ and ‘Keeping Safe.’
KS4 Adventurer students study ‘Understanding how choices affect our future,’ and ‘Recognising and managing influences on my relationships.’ KS4 Explorer students study ‘Relationships,’ ‘Personal Safety’ and ‘Values.
Post 16 Adventurer students study ‘Self-knowledge and self-esteem,’ ‘Character development’, ‘Resolving disagreements’, and ‘Social opportunities in my community.’ Post 16 Explorer students study ‘Learning to cooperate with others,’ ‘Dealing with problems,’ and ‘Exploring identity.’
Each year around 20%-25% of the school population take part in a residential activity!
The success of our residential programme stems from the very start of the KS3 learning journey where in Forest School students develop skills and knowledge surrounding, responsiveness, curiosity, discovery, anticipation, persistence, initiation, and investigation. In KS4 and KS5 this is developed further with skills that focus on independence, communication, teamwork, and leadership.
This year we are offering a 10pm challenge for some of our most complex students to stay on school site to take part in camping activities giving them the same opportunities as other students in safe and supportive environments that enable students to explore freely. Our hope is that this will lead to a full residential experience in the future!
We also offer a Summer Camp which is a one-night sleepover on school site for some of our more vulnerable students, including those with complex medical conditions.
Our five-day residential trip in Wales is also very popular with our students - we do two, five-day residential trips each year!
We are the only Special School in Coventry that runs the Bronze AND Silver Duke of Edinburgh Scheme this is a fantastic example of students applying their prior knowledge and skills and applying ALL their British Values of Respect and Tolerance, Democracy, Rules of Law, and Individual Liberty!
