At the start of the Riverbank learning journey, all students have opportunities to participate in choice-making and make choices that effect change. For example, making day-to-day safe and healthy choices is part of our school culture and is modeled by our staff team.
Riverbank students have regular opportunities to make choices that impact positively on their own learning and daily routines. For example, every year students choose a lunchtime club and/or after-school club and for Adventurer students in KS4 there is also an opportunity to choose an area of Art in which they would like to specialise.
As students progress through school and develop their knowledge of PSHCE and Citizenship we deliberately plan opportunities for students to collaborate and make choices that impact positively on decision-making processes in school and in the local and wider community. Some examples of this include:
As part of the PSHCE curriculum, KS3 students learn about ‘My Choices, My Rights’ which directly explores the idea of governments and democracy.
KS4 Adventurer students study ‘Democracy and Justice’ as an extension topic once the core components of their RSHE accreditation are completed.
Post 16 study ‘World News’ across the Adventurer and Explorer pathways which may include helping students to understand current political issues with balance, proportion, and impartiality. Post 16 Adventurer classes also study ‘Resolving disagreements’ which includes building on their prior knowledge of fair choices.
All students complete a questionnaire each year which includes asking openly about bullying. This survey influences positive change within the school and the bullying survey serves to reduce and monitor the amount and type of bullying and increase students’ resilience against bullying.
The student council - over the last 5 years our student council has played a wonderful role in influencing change. The student council meets with our senior leaders regularly, they have their own webpage https://sites.google.com/riverbankacademy.org.uk/2021-22-student-council/home and in 2021-2022 focussed on three projects called “Go Green”, “Supporting Rivers” and “Rising to Future”. In 2020 our students met with Coventry Council members to combat loneliness in the local area and prior to this our students hosted and planned a “World Class” event where over 70 outstanding mainstream schools visited to carry out 8 different projects that supported equality and inclusion.
Green Flag Award - having achieved Green Flag Status in 2019 our 16+ students continue to focus their efforts on campaigning for a greener school and community by making decisions with great justification!
Employment and Enterprise Programme - in KS4 and KS5 Adventurer students learn about making choices in the context of employment through the teaching of leadership and through internal and external work experience and volunteering.
The Active Citizen Programme is designed specifically for Explorer (KS5) and Navigator (KS4/5) students. This programme gives students the opportunity to apply their knowledge of making safe and healthy choices to support their local community. This involves working together to support the school community with day-to day-decision making processes by identifying who does which role, where they do it and how long for. As part of this programme, there is an emphasis on “‘making a difference” through collaboration, mutual agreement and respect.
