Dear graduates,

I would like to take this time to express my gratitude and excitement for the graduating class of 2022.

It was humbling to observe your resilience during a year of nervous optimism. Your positive spirits have been challenged by a stubborn pandemic, social anxiety, an economic crisis, a war in the Ukraine, crisis in the Middle East, uncertainty to the future of laws that that govern the right to medical privacy, and unfathomable domestic terrorism at academic institutions among many more. Through so much uncertainty, you found a way to endure, and produce incredible work as evidenced by the images on this site, and the record number of Society of Illustrator awards we received this past semester.

I would like to thank you for making my first year as Department Head a memorable one. I came into this position with imposter syndrome, and on many days left the ISB with doubt, confusion, and a sense of hopelessness. What kept things in perspective was observing how graceful you were in overcoming your own challenges. I would not have lasted had it not been for you. With great humility I thank you for collectively being the anchor that kept me grounded and optimistic.

Take your time going through your colleague’s images, and celebrate what you’ve achieved. You deserve every bit of sleep that is coming your way. Hope to see you around in the future. You’re always invited back to share with us about your journey.

 Respectfully,

 Eric T.
