Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which students develop the skills to understand and manage their emotions, build healthy relationships, make responsible decisions, and successfully navigate challenges. SEL helps students learn how to learn, how to connect with others, and how to regulate themselves—skills that are essential both inside and outside the classroom.
When students feel safe, connected, and emotionally regulated, their brains are more available for learning. SEL helps students:
Stay focused and engaged in instruction
Persist through challenges and problem-solve effectively
Develop goal-setting and self-management skills
Strengthen communication, collaboration, and critical thinking
Research consistently shows that students who participate in high-quality SEL programming demonstrate improved academic achievement, increased motivation, and stronger classroom engagement.
Behavior is communication. SEL gives students the tools they need to express themselves appropriately and manage stress before it escalates. Through SEL, students learn to:
Identify and regulate emotions
Use coping strategies during frustration or conflict
Resolve problems peacefully
Build empathy and respect for others
As a result, schools see fewer behavioral disruptions, reduced office referrals, and more positive, productive learning environments.
