My daughter once said as we were walking along the beach "mummy, I bet children love being with you because you are fun, it takes one moment with you to create the ripple effect" As she said this I looked down and saw the 'ripples' in the sand. This got me thinking (back then) that play therapy is very much like the ripples in the sand, it takes one session, like waves coming into shore, to create a ripple effect. Changing patterns on the beach that are beautiful to look at, reflect on and with each carrying its own story, changing the way the sand looks moment by moment. Just as the stages and themes of play therapy allow for a child to process change, redirect pathways and reflect on their journey. The Play Therapist is like the sand, accepting and honoring the waves (behaviours and emotions) as they come rolling in, whilst remaining congruent, being present and utilizing Unconditional Positive Regard. The child, with a sense of belonging can display their various emotions and share their story, in a safe way through the therapeutic powers of play.
