The Community Outreach Program Wellbeing Speaker Series aims to foster a strong relationship between the district, our families, and the community by providing opportunities to come together to learn about trending issues related to the academic, social, and emotional development of today’s youth. 

Two of the Spring 2022 presentations will focus on sleep and wellbeing.

 “A Perfect Storm:  Sleep in Adolescents” 

In this virtual presentation, Judith Owens, MD, MPH, Co-Director of Sleep Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital and internationally recognized authority on pediatric sleep, will describe normal sleep development during adolescence, outline the physical and mental health, safety and academic consequences of deficient sleep in teens, and summarize data supporting healthy school start times as a public health intervention.  Please register in advance.  “Healthy Sleep, Healthy Teens"

Heather Turgeon, MFT and Julie Wright, MFT are psychotherapists, sleep specialists, and authors of the popular parenting books, The Happy Sleeper, and the new book Generation Sleepless.  Their work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Atlantic, and NPR.  Through this virtual presentation, Ms. Turgeon and Ms. Wright will explore the science of teen sleep, along with ways that families, high schools, sports teams, and others can take steps to help teens improve their sleep, health, and wellbeing.  Please register in advance.
