Mrs. Kounnas' Art Room
How Art Class will Benefit Our Students in the 21st Century
The art classroom is a place where students will work to build on 21st Century Skills, such as creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and communication. To build on these skills, students will work on art projects that require them to inquire, problem-solve, innovate and design. They'll work on becoming resilient when projects don't go as planned, self-disciplined as they stay on task and they'll also learn to "Think like an artist" to help themselves stay positive along the creative path.
What Students will be Doing in Mrs. Kounnas' Art Room
Students will be taking inspiration from a variety of academic subject areas, classic and contemporary artists, cultures from around the world and children's literature as they create projects which incorporate the principals and elements of design. All our lessons align with National Core Arts Standards.
VPA Vision Statement
The Visual and Performing Arts Departments throughout Ridgefield Public Schools aim to create inspiring experiences that are common to all the arts: exploring, creating, performing, presenting, interpreting, connecting, and reflecting. We believe the arts promote awareness of the world and an opportunity to seek meaning through a creative process.
About me
Hi everyone!
The first thing you should know about me, is that I absolutely love art and sharing this love with my students. To give you a little professional background, I started out as an art teacher in the Cayman Islands where I taught K-12 at the international school. After five years of teaching in a tropical paradise, I relocated to NYC where I taught art at a therapy center. I had my first daughter there and after a few years, moved to Ridgefield, Connecticut and had my second daughter. I taught jewelry, drawing, sculpture and painting at Wilton High School up until this year. I am so excited to have the opportunity to teach at Farmingville and Scotland Elementary Schools and work in the wonderful community where I live. My goal is to inspire my students to think like artists and build on 21st century skills, which are so important in our modern day world!
Don't be surprised if you see me out running around Ridgefield or hanging out with my family at Ballard Park or the Rec Center park, as those are my two favorite activities outside of school. I also love hiking, cake decorating and working on DIY home renovations with my husband.
Thank you for welcoming me into the RPS community!
