In 1997, Wally Trott began building the trails using simple tools like a lawnmower, axe, chainsaw, and pruning equipment, following deer paths and the perimeter of the school property. The land was much rougher then, overgrown with tall grass and brambles. His inspiration came from multiple sources, including his children's involvement in running and his family's passion for the sport. Trott wanted to create an alternative fall activity in Richmond, reviving cross-country running that had disappeared from the school's sports offerings in the 60s and 70s. With support from the athletic director, he helped start a running club, which eventually became official school teams.
Trott also felt a deep desire to give back to the running community that had offered so much to his family. His goal was to create a space where youth could challenge themselves and experience the joy of competitive running. Additionally, the positive feedback he received from local trail users, who appreciated the sense of escape the paths provided, motivated him to continue his efforts.
What began as a bushwhacking project in the summer of 1996 with a friend evolved into a full 3.1-mile cross-country course by the time his son reached 8th grade. Trail maintenance became a year-round activity, with winter being especially important for clearing downed branches and improving the path. For Trott, this project became a labor of love, not just for his family, but for the whole community.
During the summer of 2024, the Richmond Trails Association undertook a comprehensive restoration project to revitalize Wally's vision for the Richmond Trails. Dedicated volunteers worked diligently to clear brush and debris from the trails, ensuring safe and accessible pathways. Additionally, they installed gravel in key areas, restored existing bridges, and constructed new culverts to enhance the infrastructure of the trails.
Many thanks to the volunteers and businesses who donated time and material resources to this project!
On Saturday, October 5th, 2024, during Richmond's homecoming weekend, the rehabilitated trails were officially dedicated to Wally Trott in recognition of his unwavering commitment to promoting the joy of running in Richmond. This dedication honors his significant contributions to the community and the enduring impact he has had on RMHS Cross Country and local outdoor recreation.
