Library books are the property of Windsor Elementary. Payment must be made if a student loses or damages a book beyond repair. Students are not charged a daily late fee. Fines and fees for lost or overdue books can be removed by returning the book that was checked out in good condition.
Fines and fees are paid to Windsor's bookkeeper, Olga Santiago: the librarian does not handle cash.
Students receive a fine or fee when:
Books are not returned by the end of the school year.
The book is damaged in a way that cannot be fixed.
Water, mold, or food damage
Multiple pages torn out and missing, or detachment of pages from spine that cannot be glued
Part of the book is torn off (eg. dust jacket, cover, spine)
The student has caused repeated damage to books (eg. removing labels, drawing).
The student owes money to another school for damaged or lost items.
Books from other schools can be returned to Windsor. The librarian will send the book back to the original school by district mail. These will show up on an overdue notice with the abbreviated school name. EG: Polo Road Elementary is [PRE].
Please contact the child's original school to make payments. Payments for other schools cannot be made at Windsor.
What Happens if my Child Owes Money?
If a student has more than $20 owed to the library for missing books or damage, they will be unable to check out more books from the library until the books are returned or fees are paid.
Fees that are not paid by the end of a school year are turned in to the bookkeeper. They will remain on a student's record until paid or the books are returned.
How do I Know if I Need to Make a Payment?
Students are given monthly notices. These are small papers which list every overdue book a student currently has checked out. They also show any fines the student has received for damaged books or from other schools in the district.
If a book is more than two months overdue or a fine for damage has been created, the parent or guardian email associated with the student will be contacted.
Can I Buy Another Copy of the Book Instead?
No, you cannot pay for a book by purchasing a replacement.
Could There be a Mistake?
Sometimes, students may put books they have checked out back on the shelf or not scan them back into the library properly. If you think a book was returned and are still getting notices that it is checked out, you may request a shelf check. The library staff will attempt to locate the book on the library shelves. If the book is found, the fine will be removed.
An inventory of all books in the library is conducted annually in the spring. Items found during inventory periods wil be checked in and replacement fees will be removed.
What if I Paid for a Book, Then Find it Later?
If a book is found after the replacement fee is paid and the book is in acceptable condition, the replacement fee should be refundable. After three years, the book is no longer eligible for a refund.
