Books get lost in plain sight all the time! Keep books in backpacks, cubbies, or desks when they are not being read. This also keeps books away from little brothers and sisters or pets. Books should not go on the floor.
Don't Get Books Wet or Dirty
Water can ruin a book, and nobody wants to read a book covered in mustard. Make sure that you keep books away from dirt, food, and liquids. Make sure water bottles are closed tight and not inside your backpack.
Borrow Books From the Library, NOT Your Friends
If a friend loses the book you checked out, you're responsible for it! If your friend wants to borrow the book, they need to get that book after it is returned to the library. Try putting a book on hold if you really want it.
Let the Librarian Fix Your Book, Don't do it Yourself!
What happens if you accidentally glue a book together when you were trying to fix it? What if you make a mistake? Don't worry about it! If your book has a problem, let the librarian know. Most damage can be fixed.
Use a Bookmark, NOT a Pencil
Bookmarks are made out of thin paper. If you use a pencil or something big to keep your place, you're actually hurting the book! Putting a pencil in the book bends the pages up and damages the spine. The library has free bookmarks and you can always buy or make your own.
Return or Renew Books on Time
The longer you keep a book out, the more likely it will get lost. Make sure you read the books you check out and return them when you are finished. If you're not done with a longer book, you can renew it!
Don't Write, Draw, or Color in a Library Book
Sometimes, books are in black and white and that is OKAY! If the author and illustrator wanted color, the book would have it. Please do not draw, color, or write inside a book. Ask for paper instead!
Hug and Love Your Books, Too
Hold your books carefully so they do not fall on the floor. You can carry books more easily if you put the biggest one on the bottom and the smallest one on top.
Labels are Important, Don't Rip Them Off!
Library books have a spine label, school barcode, and endpaper stamps with the school name. If you tear off labels, it can be hard to tell if a book belongs to the library. If you tear off a lot of labels, you may get a small fine.
Ask if You Have Questions
If you have a question about library books, please ask a librarian.Â
