6th Grade Course Overview:

Mathematics: The Honors and Accelerated Math programs will build on the prior learning of previous grade levels while adding on important elements that they will use for the remainder of their academic paths. The students will learn how to solve equations, find percentages, calculate surface area of 3D shapes, identify and calculate angles and their measures, and much more. Through it all, they will be challenged to hone their critical-thinking and problem-solving skills to not just find the answers to problems, but to understand and explain the answers. The pace may seem grueling at times, but they will emerge at the end of the year prepared to take on Geometry and Algebra in the following years.  

Social Studies: Units of study will include historical skills, River Valley Civilizations, Greco-Roman cultures, the Medieval world, the European Renaissance, MesoAmerica and Exploration, the Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution, Imperialism, and Global Conflict and Interdependence.

English Language Arts: Extends learning beyond grade-level expectations through 7th-grade activities, interdisciplinary connections, and enriched learning experiences. Instruction is organized around engaging thematic units such as Testing Our Limits, You and Me, In the Dark, Personal Best, Making Your Mark, and True to Yourself. While StudySync is used as a resource, much of the curriculum is teacher-designed to promote deeper thinking, creativity, and authentic learning. Students strengthen their skills in literary analysis, oral and written communication, grammar, Greek and Latin roots, and research. 

Science: Engages students in the study of Life, Earth, and Physical Science through inquiry, exploration, and hands-on investigations. Students think and work like scientists as they design experiments, solve real-world problems, analyze data, and apply scientific and engineering practices. Through collaborative projects, laboratory experiences, technology integration, and interdisciplinary connections, students develop critical thinking skills while discovering how science impacts the world around them.
