AVID

AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a rigorous academic elective course that prepares motivated students, in the academic middle, to reach their potential, achieve their goals and prepare for 4-year college eligibility. AVID helps with study skills, organizational skills, writing skills, and being prepared for college. Any student who could succeed in college prep and/or honors courses, but think they need some guidance and college readiness preparation are encouraged to apply.

Who is an AVID Student

AVID students are students in the middle, capable of completing a college preparatory path with support. These students often are not realizing their full potential academically. In the identification process a number of criteria are considered, including:

  • A student who has a 2.0+ GPA (Grade Point Average)

  • A student who has appropriate classroom behavior

  • A student who has excellent attendance

  • A student who has the motivation, desire, and ability to prepare for entrance to a four-year college or university

  • A student who has parent/guardian support and maintains contact with the AVID teacher

AVID is NOT a remedial program since it requires all students to be enrolled in college preparatory courses starting their freshman year and to have taken at least one honors, advanced placement, or dual-credit course by graduation.

AVID students will

* receive instruction utilizing a rigorous college preparatory curriculum provided by AVID, engage in tutor facilitated study groups, motivational activities, college trips and academic success skills;

* participate in activities that incorporate strategies focused on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading to support their academic growth.

* take the year long elective class each year.

AVID students must earn at least a grade of 70 (C) in all of their courses for each grading period. All students are required to participate in extracurricular activities and engage in community service.
