CAT serves as an acronym for Carolina Alliance For Technology. Westwood High School has been awarded funding along with three other High School's in the state of SC. The additional funding allows for restructuring of the instructional process for students with interests in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) related careers. CAT focuses on an expansion of individual learning time with an emphasis on project- based learning experiences.

CAT is designed to help bridge the gap between the needs of United States businesses and the skills of future employees who are interested in computer science and engineering related career fields. Employers are looking for individuals with specialized skills to fill high-demand vacancies in these areas. The funding that Westwood receives for the CAT Program affords students better opportunities to meet the demands of the workforce system as it relates to these high demand careers.

WESTWOOD'S CAT PROGRAM
WHS CAT Program promotes service learning, project-based learning, career-based field studies, job shadowing and internship placements, mentoring and other extended learning opportunities through partnerships with Information Technology and Engineering based businesses.
Summer Opportunities at Clemson University Summer Scholars program and DisneyYouth Education Series for Leadership and Teamwork program are available for students that qualify to attend.
Our CAT Program also provides personalized support for each student through a designated CAT School Counselor (Ms. April Bookert) and Career Development Facilitator (Nathaniel Cropp), as well as a CAT Grant Coordinator (Zipporah Little) These advocates for students keep an eye on academic progress, provide individual mentoring and encourage a sense or true belonging. CAT student's also have a common area in the CAT COMMONS (RM #131) for lunch, tutoring and collaboration.
The CAT Program provides an opportunity for students to earn college credit and nationally recognized certifications upon successful completion of this amazing 4 year program.

PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS
PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS
- Take at least one Computer Science or Engineering Class per year.
- Accumulate 10 hours of college credit.
- Complete Interest Inventories, Skill Surveys and Work Ready Skills training.
- Acquire 24 high school credits per state requirement for graduation.
- Obtain at least a Silver on Work Keys.
- Engage in career exploration field studies and job shadowing.
- Complete 20 hours of Internship.
- Participate and complete at least one service learning project per year.
- Attend 1 CAT field study per year.
- Participate in CAT mentoring & counseling.
